Lead Design Engineer – Cables (Cambuslang, Scotland, United Kingdom) – ScottishPower via SP Energy Networks, a part of the Iberdrola Group.
Salary: £60,800 – £76,000 per year (reviewed annually). Employment type: Permanent, hybrid.
The role focuses on leading the pre‑contract design and delivery of complex cable projects within the network, ensuring compliance with technical, safety and environmental standards.
Responsibilities
Lead the development of pre‑contract design and delivery of projects, focusing on the technical aspects of cable systems.
Promote Health, Safety, Quality and Environmental compliance internally and externally, driving continuous improvement.
Assess engineering documentation for feasibility and compliance with client requirements; support accurate budget preparation.
Deliver basic and detailed engineering designs for cable systems on high‑value, complex projects.
Resolve statutory, land and consent issues related to underground cable routes.
Conduct technical assessments of tender submissions and provide recommendations to clients.
Define cable equipment requirements for project documentation, ensuring compliance with legislation, policies and operational standards.
Prepare and review cable drawings and technical specifications for construction, procurement and stakeholder engagement.
Assist in resolving technical issues during construction, analyse common faults and implement preventive measures.
Support tender assessments for cable works and suppliers; assist project management in bid evaluations.
Prepare project quality documentation in line with SP Energy Network and client processes; deliver PQP requirements.
Drive best practice and technological innovation within the team; evaluate and implement new ideas, equipment, materials and methods to improve safety, efficiency and cost‑effectiveness.
Contribute to training needs analysis for new products and assist in developing technical, operational and safety training packages.
Mentor junior staff within the department or project team.
Collaborate with global multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver integrated solutions.
What You'll Bring (Qualifications)
Degree in Engineering or equivalent experience.
Working towards membership of a professional institution.
Proficiency in CYMCAP or similar ampacity software.
Strong knowledge of cable systems and associated equipment engineering.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to build effective relationships across teams.
Ability to apply and promote CDM and Health & Safety best practices in a design environment.
Minimum Criteria
Engineering degree or HND/HNC with equivalent experience.
Experience using CYMCAP or similar ampacity software.
Proven track record in delivering engineering solutions and designs for high‑value, complex transmission cable projects.
Ability to communicate effectively and influence senior managers.
Ability to write clear, concise technical reports and documentation.
