Our client has almost half a century of expertise in the design, development and manufacture of bespoke automation and robotic systems across a diverse range of industries. They are regarded by many as one of the leading automation system solution providers in the UK and are now recruiting an experienced Lead/Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join their team and deliver innovative special‑purpose automation machinery projects.
Key Responsibilities
Design, detail, and deliver special purpose machine projects from order acceptance to customer hand‑over.
Communicate effectively with customers, suppliers and team members to meet overall project requirements.
Perform mechanical design and detailing using 3D CAD within the project plan time frames.
Arrange Design Reviews to ensure designs are robust, reliable, design‑for‑assembly, and meet or exceed budgetary constraints.
Obtain Design Pass‑Off from the customer on time and in accordance with the project plan.
Produce BOMs on time and within budget, and negotiate with external suppliers to secure cost‑efficient materials.
Assist the electrical design process through clear, effective communication during the mechanical design phase.
Compile build folders and communicate build details to machine‑tool fitters for an efficient build process.
Provide direction and support to fitters, electricians and other engineers as required.
Visit customer sites to understand requirements and obtain necessary measurements.
Assess and improve design concepts with the team at the sales quotation stage to reduce risks, costs and lead times.
Secure all parts, samples and drawings in advance, and verify the accuracy of design work produced by other designers.
Conduct project reviews with customers periodically and report status, maintaining a comprehensive Technical Construction File (TCF) that includes manuals, risk assessments, mechanical parts lists and drawings.
Carry out machine risk assessments to meet Machinery Directive requirements and lead projects during the development and installation phases, ensuring compliance with safety rules and policies.
