Job Description Summary As a Lead Control Systems engineer you will report to the Control Systems Manager. The successful candidate will be part of a highly motivated and dynamic team of engineers working on the system requirements, design and performance verification of control and protection functions for LCC and VSC HVDC schemes. The development of such control and protection systems is technically challenging and involves a variety of engineering disciplines, teamwork and an innovative approach.
As a Lead Control Systems Engineer, you will be expected to model the DC system, the AC network equivalents, renewable systems (wind parks, solar PV cells etc.) in PSCAD, convert or model AC network equivalents in RSCAD, and interface with control contract equipment to validate control and protection systems.
Essential Responsibilities
Support tendering, operations, contractual and after sales needs for HVDC system modelling in PSCAD and RTDS.
Model AC networks in simulation tools (RTDS and PSCAD) and validate them.
Conduct dynamic performance studies using offline and online simulation tools.
Model renewable AC networks (solar, wind parks) in PSCAD and RSCAD and validate them.
Convert PSS/E AC networks to PSCAD models.
Lead engineering design reviews, identify project risks and technical weaknesses, and propose safe, reliable and compliant solutions.
Understand project milestones, financial impact, and ensure technical risks are mitigated.
Ensure project plans contain necessary activities and studies to meet customer requirements.
Improve existing algorithms/strategies for power fault recovery or instability issues during DPS studies.
Develop new strategies for control, protection and sequencing (start‑up/shut‑down) to meet customer technical specifications.
Support continual improvement by introducing tools, methods, and processes, coordinating with continuous improvement leaders.
Promote standard product methodology mindset and seek opportunities to re‑use solutions, improve quality and reliability while reducing delivery timeline and costs.
Promote collaboration between projects and incorporate return of experience.
Qualifications / Essential Requirements
Engineering degree or equivalent with experience in power systems and power electronics, or proven knowledge and experience in HVDC.
Strong sense of urgency and ability to identify and manage technical risks.
Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to create and present technical reports and respond to client questions.
Ability to understand and communicate customer requirements, lead technical discussions, and develop client relationships.
Understanding of functional characteristics of power systems and interactions between AC and HVDC.
Knowledge of HVDC control, protection and sequencing strategy.
Hands‑on experience in PSCAD and RSCAD simulation tools.
Ability to work to deadlines under pressure while maintaining safety, quality and engineering integrity.
Flexibility with working hours and willingness to travel globally.
Desired Characteristics
Process improvement or RCA experience or certification.
Ability to define requirements and ensure they adhere to best practice.
Experience in technical leadership.
Experience working in the HVDC industry.
