Client Overview Our client is a rapidly growing engineering services provider specialising in grid-scale renewable energy infrastructure, as well as being part of one of Scotland’s largest family-owned groundworks and civil engineering firms.
They are currently looking for a skilled Electrical Design Engineer (HV) to join their engineering division, contributing to the successful delivery of HV substation and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects nationwide.
Role Overview In this role, you will take ownership of delivering electrical designs and conducting system studies that form the backbone of their EPC projects, ensuring robust, safe, and grid-compliant operation of high-voltage networks and renewable energy assets.
You’ll work closely with a diverse team of specialists, including civil engineers, protection and SCADA experts, construction professionals, and commissioning teams, to produce solutions that are technically sound, practical to build, and cost-efficient.
Responsibilities
Lead and deliver power system design packages for HV substations, grid connections, and BESS projects (typically 11 - 400 kV).
Develop single line diagrams (SLDs), equipment layouts, cable schedules, interconnection diagrams, and earthing/bonding designs.
Perform power system studies including load flow, short circuit, protection coordination, harmonic, and dynamic stability analysis.
Support grid connection applications, compliance submissions, and modelling (DNO/TO/NGESO).
Prepare technical specifications for electrical equipment (transformers, switchgear, cables, earthing systems, etc).
Liaise with DNOs, TOs, and NGESO to ensure compliance with grid code, G99, ENA, and NG standards.
Provide technical support during procurement, construction, and commissioning stages.
Conduct design reviews, ensure adherence to standards and QA processes, and manage deliverables through Procore or equivalent systems.
Work collaboratively with Protection, SCADA, Civil, and Construction Engineers to ensure full design integration.
Mentor junior engineers and support the continuous improvement of design processes and standards.
Requirements
Degree in Electrical or Power Engineering.
3+ years’ experience in power system design within HV substations, grid connections, or BESS projects.
Strong knowledge of HV/LV electrical systems, grid code compliance, and UK standards.
Experience with power system modelling software like Dig SILENT Power Factory, ETAP, PSCAD, IPSA).
Familiarity with IEC, ENA, and National Grid specifications.
Experience working in a multi-disciplinary EPC environment.
Understanding of BESS operation, control philosophy, and grid integration.
Working knowledge of Procore, BIM 360, or other project management platforms.
Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working toward professional registration (IET).
Familiarity with functional safety, interlocking logic, and commissioning activities.
Up to £50,000 per annum (DoE)
