Orbex is looking for a
Mechanical Design Engineer
to join our Assembly Integration and Test (AIT) team, supporting the design, analysis, and manufacturing of our launch platform structure and ground system equipment.
Role Overview This is an exciting role where you will work with a team of experts to develop high-precision, high-performance components that will ultimately be launched into orbit. You will collaborate closely with team members across design, development, composites, analysis, and manufacturing, learning from some of the best engineers in the industry.
Responsibilities
Design and development of structural and mechanical components and assemblies for the launch vehicle and its supporting ground segment equipment (GSE), including assembly and test fixtures.
Evaluate design and ensure functionality, ease of assembly, and safety for manufacture, assembly and system integration.
Conduct computational analysis of stress, static and dynamic loading, high temperatures and vibrational impact.
Support development of Launch platform structures and GSE (including Launch Vehicle Dollys and Rollout vehicles).
Provide hands‑on engineering support to hardware prototype development and test.
Managing multiple tasks and work packages in parallel with changeable priorities.
Develop detailed technical documentation and ensure adherence to requirements, safety, and industry regulations.
Qualifications and Experience
Educational background in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
Track record of delivering a whole development lifecycle including requirements capture, concepting, detail design, design for manufacture, GD&T, production and verification.
Proficient in the use of CAD (SOLIDWORKS, CATIA, NX).
Working knowledge of aerospace and industrial engineering materials and their properties.
Proficient in numerical analysis tool (e.g. Matlab/Simulink).
Experienced with engine performance modelling tools (e.g. CEA, RPA, Redtop, etc.).
Cycle simulation tool proficiency desired (e.g. Ecosimpro, Simscape).
Desirable Experience and Traits
Experience working hands‑on with liquid and/or hybrid propulsion systems.
Hands‑on experience with fluid system testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
Familiarity with industry standards and references (e.g. MIL‑HDBK‑5/17, ECSS‑E‑HB‑32, NASA‑STD‑5001, GSFC‑STD‑7000).
