GKN Aerospace in Luton, established in 1993, is a world leader in commercial and military ice‑protection systems and transparencies, offering design, analysis, testing, certification and manufacture for programmes including Boeing 787, Dreamliner, Airbus A320, AgustaWestland AW101, Eurofighter Typhoon and Lockheed Martin F‑22 Raptor.
The Luton Engineering & Technology team focuses on developing product and manufacturing process technology for aircraft ice protection systems, transparencies and coatings, and specialist structures for both civil and defence applications. We are looking for a Design Engineer to join our ice protection systems team to support site sustainment design engineering enquiries and provide general department support.
As a Design Engineer you will be responsible for creating and maintaining product definition, ensuring ongoing product performance against requirements, and working across the product lifecycle in activities such as material review board, customer concession management, manufacturing problem solving, engineering change management and in‑service technical support.
Additional duties include continuous improvement of products, processes, tools and design handbooks, new product development activities (requirements management, geometric design, materials selection, tooling, manufacturing process development, assembly methods, specifications, product verification, qualification and certification testing) and contributing to high‑impact research and development projects.
You will have a track record of delivering high quality technical work, be comfortable within a project environment, possess good written and oral communication skills, and be confident working with diverse stakeholders.
Core operational hours at our Luton site are 07:30‑16:30, Monday to Thursday, and 07:30‑12:30 on Friday. The role also requires flexibility to undertake occasional travel; such travel will be infrequent.
Job Responsibilities
Develop design solutions compliant to cost and manufacturing requirements using techniques such as DFMA and design to cost.
Create and maintain detailed design definition (drawings/specifications) including interfaces, dimensions, materials, parts, manufacturing process requirements, assemblies and tolerances.
Deliver assigned project deliverables according to relevant procedures.
Identify test methods and alternate compliance means (e.g., analysis/similarity) to demonstrate design compliance.
Prepare compliance documentation for internal, customer and regulatory requirements.
Represent Design Engineering in Material Review Board and Integrated Program Teams.
Identify and resolve product non‑compliances with requirements, technical drawings, specifications or standards.
Understand and align with the strategic direction of the product group.
Ensure EHS policy and process adherence, contributing to a proactive EHS culture.
Support GKN’s ‘Great Place to Work’ principles – safe, innovative, open & honest, care & respect, and ownership.
What You'll Bring Essential
Hold an accredited relevant Engineering qualification at Bachelor level or equivalent experience.
Experience creating models and drawings using CAD software.
Experience of configuration control & change management and use of PLM systems.
Logical and methodical approach to task planning with evidence‑based decision making and problem solving.
Good interpersonal and communication skills; able to work independently and as part of a multi‑disciplinary team.
Good oral and written communication skills – able to create clear and accurate technical content.
Working knowledge of MS Office suite.
Desirable
Experience using CATIA V5 software.
Awareness of aerospace certification requirements.
Previous experience in the aerospace sector.
Experience using SAP.
Experience using Windchill PLM.
Awareness of other functions such as Operations, Production and Supplier Management.
