Safety by Design Specialist – London Join a world-leading design practice and help shape the safety and performance of landmark projects across the globe.
Foster + Partners is one of the world’s most influential architecture and design practices — an international studio renowned for innovation, technical excellence, and redefining what the built environment can achieve. As our projects continue to expand in scale, complexity and global reach, the integration of forward-thinking safety methodologies is more critical than ever.
We are now looking for an exceptional
Safety by Design Specialist
to join our London-based Technical Design Group. This is a rare opportunity to be part of a multidisciplinary team responsible for embedding world‑class health and safety risk management principles across some of the most ambitious and high-profile projects in the UK and internationally.
Why this role? Safety by Design at Foster + Partners is not a compliance function — it is a strategic discipline at the core of delivering resilient, future‑ready buildings. Our team supports every studio across the Practice, working closely with architects, engineers and specialists to ensure our work not only meets regulatory requirements but sets new standards for best practice.
In this role, you will influence the entire project lifecycle: guiding design teams, shaping processes, advising clients, and supporting the delivery of our duties under CDM 2015, the Building Safety Act, and international equivalents. From skyscrapers and airports to cultural projects and masterplans, you’ll bring clarity, structure and technical depth to a global portfolio that demands excellence.
If you want to apply your expertise at the highest level — in an environment that values innovation, collaboration and technical rigour — this is the place to do it.
What you’ll be doing
Supporting studio teams in fulfilling CDM and Building Safety Act Principal Designer duties on UK projects
Advising design teams, clients and duty holders on health and safety design risk management
Acting as Principal Designer where appointed, ensuring delivery in accordance with CDM 2015 and relevant legislation
Supporting the development and evolution of PD roles within the Practice
Reviewing UK and international projects to ensure consistent pre-construction H&S standards
Applying Safety by Design principles across overseas projects and advising on comparable international regulations
Assisting with Design Risk Assessments across both internal and external tools
Liaising with external stakeholders and authorities, including the HSE
Creating and refining guidance, tools and training material
Delivering training to in-house disciplines
Conducting research into emerging standards and best practice
Supporting the Head of Safety by Design and wider team across all associated duties
What you’ll bring
A degree in architecture, architectural technology, engineering or a related discipline
Strong understanding of design and construction methodologies
Ability to manage time, prioritise and meet key project milestones
Excellent verbal and written communication skills — articulate, diplomatic and clear
Methodical, detail‑driven approach with strong analytical ability
Confidence working under pressure and to tight deadlines
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships at every level
Proficiency in relevant software, including the Autodesk suite
A proactive, pragmatic and solutions‑focused mindset
Discretion and professionalism in handling sensitive information
Desirable:
NEBOSH Construction Certificate and/or membership of ARB, RIBA, ICE, APS, IOSH or similar.
What’s in it for you? Joining Foster + Partners means joining a global design community that pushes boundaries and shapes cities worldwide. You’ll collaborate with some of the most skilled teams in the industry, gaining exposure to complex, high‑profile projects and playing a central role in ensuring they are designed and delivered safely.
You’ll be part of a culture that values innovation, technical excellence and continual learning — with the opportunity to influence safety standards across a world‑class practice and contribute to work that will be experienced by millions.
This is your chance to elevate your career and be part of something extraordinary.
