Role Overview

The Operations Supervisor - Terminals is responsible for overseeing the efficient and safe operations of the Seaport Terminal in Toronto, Ontario. This role is responsible for coordinating the movement and storage of containers, managing the terminal team on site and remotely, and ensuring compliance with safety, operational, and security procedures. You will be accountable for building and sustaining positive employee engagement and customer satisfaction and will play a key role in maintaining a smooth and organized workflow in the Terminal. The key to success in this role will be strong collaboration with customers, vendors, and internal teams to deliver exceptional service and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Terminal Operations: Oversee daily Terminal activities including gate operations, container handling, terminal flow, and equipment coordination to ensure safe, efficient, and consistent execution. Oversee weekly scheduling and ensure the team effectively manages exception handling and value-added operational duties, including the coordination and follow-through of repair activities, to maintain a clean, organized, and operationally ready Terminal.
  • Team Supervision & Development: Train, coach, and engage team members (Gate Clerks, Crane Operators, Terminal personnel, etc.), ensuring consistent performance and operational discipline. Conduct regular 1:1 meetings, performance check-ins, and facilitate ongoing training to support team development and engagement.
  • SOP Compliance, Review & Standardization: Ensure all team members follow established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) at all times. Take ownership of reviewing, maintaining, and updating SOPs to reflect operational changes, best practices, and opportunities for increased standardization across the Terminal. Promote a culture where procedural consistency is foundational to safe and efficient operations.
  • Process Optimization & Innovation: Identify and implement opportunities to improve operational effectiveness and streamline Terminal processes. Drive adoption of new technologies and AI-based solutions to enhance scheduling, reporting, inventory accuracy, and overall Terminal performance.
  • Safety Compliance: Ensure strict adherence to all health and safety policies, site protocols, and regulatory requirements. Promote a proactive safety culture by monitoring compliance, addressing unsafe behaviours, conducting safety discussions, and ensuring timely completion of required training and incident reporting.
  • Terminal Security Oversight: Provide oversight of all Terminal security programs, protection protocols, and access-control procedures. Ensure security systems, including cameras, monitoring tools, alarms, and digital platforms, are fully functional, up to date, and operating efficiently. Verify that team members adhere to established security standards and promptly escalate any breaches, risks, or system failures to maintain a safe and secure Terminal environment.
  • Reporting & Performance Insights: Deliver weekly Terminal dashboards and turnaround-time reports to leadership. Maintain accurate records of Terminal activities, equipment movements, and compliance checks. Expert insight into the data presented is critical and highly valued—providing not only accurate reporting but meaningful interpretation that informs decisions, highlights risks, and identifies opportunities for operational improvement.
  • Vendor & Third-Party Management: Manage relationships with external vendors and service providers, monitor performance, and ensure service quality meets expectations and operational requirements. Hold the direct working relationship with the Terminal’s primary vendor responsible for crane maintenance and repairs, ensuring timely service, quality work, and operational uptime.
  • Customer Service, Monitoring & Escalation: Ensure Terminal customer interactions, including status updates, container inventory communication, issue resolution, and service inquiries, are carried out by employees in a professional, accurate, and timely manner. Monitor team performance in all customer-facing activities, intervene when service standards are not met, and escalate customer issues promptly to ensure resolution and maintain strong customer relationships.
