Sarasota County's Public Utilities Department is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented college intern to support the Water Division with a focus on meter related data and analytics. This internship offers a unique opportunity for students pursuing degrees in Environmental Science, Engineering, Public Health, or related fields to gain hands-on experience in municipal utility operations, data analysis and regulatory compliance. This internship offers the opportunity to gain experience in Business Process development/documentation. Additionally, learning experiences can be developed in relation to intern's interest and area of study within the field of Customer Service and Technical Services areas. The program will provide the intern with a constructive review and evaluation of their skills and competencies, providing growth opportunities and direction to further professional and educational development. Operational Support / General Duties Assist in developing communication and outreach materials explaining the technology behind newly installed meters. Maintain accurate and up-to-date data for the meter replacement program. Identify meters impacted by root intrusion and document findings. Help develop a plan for prioritizing follow-ups, propose solutions, and develop a recommendation report. (Offer specifics on vegetation management, meter relocation, and budgetary concerns) Track, organize, and analyze quality control data. Quantify/sort meter test results, to identify trends, outliers and present data. Accompany the meter Project Manager in the field to observe water meter changeouts performed by the county vendor. Build foundational knowledge that will support the ability to analyze field data, contribute to reporting efforts, and evaluate installation quality. Foster critical thinking around the relationship between field execution, reporting, and overall program performance. Assist in developing visual dashboards and summary reports to supervisors and project stakeholders. Internship Program Responsibilities A presentation to the County Administrator and other County Leadership staff is required at the close of the internship program on Friday, August 7, 2026. Participate in all organized intern events and trainings. Preferred Qualifications: Pursuing a degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Public Health, Communications, or a related field. Interest in water/wastewater utilities, public service, or environmental compliance. Proficiency or working knowledge in software tools such as Smartsheet, Microsoft Excel, Power BI, and experience with data dashboards and visualization preferred. Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple data sets simultaneously. Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, suitable for technical and public outreach contexts. Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment while taking initiative on individual tasks. Program Dates: The 2026 internship program will begin on May 18, 2026 and end on August 7, 2026. Internship Hours: 40 hours/week, Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Pay Range: $15 per hour (high school student) up to $20 per hour (Grad/Masters student), based on your credit hours earned.
