Burl Evanston is a new wood-fired restaurant opening in early 2026 in the Central Street Merchant District in Evanston, Illinois. The first restaurant from Chef Tom Carlin and partner Rachel Canfora-Carlin, known for their craftsmanship, warmth, and genuine hospitality, Burl will offer a refined yet approachable dining experience rooted in seasonality and community.
We are seeking an experienced a Full-Time Server Assistant who will be an essential member of the guest experience– present on the floor, attentive to details, and engaged with guests throughout their visit. This role supports servers and the dining room while also providing warm, thoughtful interactions that make guests feel cared for. As part of the opening team, the Server Assistant team will help establish the rhythm, standards, and culture that will define service at Burl from day one.
Experience & Qualifications:
- Minimum of 1 years working in a fast paced, full service restaurant
- Passion for excellence, superior service standards, and a positive attitude.
- Must have open availability including evenings & weekends
- Strong interpersonal & communication skills
- Ability to multi-task and stay composed in a high-volume environment
- Arrive on time, prepared, and in proper uniform
- Must be able to frequently lift items weighing up to 50 pounds and have the ability to stand for extended periods.
- Must have completed and maintained certification in ServSafe Food Handler Certification, and ServSafe Allergen
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Participate fully in pre-opening training, mock services, and system testing
- Remain adaptable and solution-oriented during opening phases
- Engage warmly and professionally with guests throughout service
- Move with purpose and awareness in the dining room
- Assist with greeting tables, providing water service, and checking in on guest comfort
- Clear and reset tables efficiently while maintaining guest awareness
- Respond promptly to guest requests and communicate needs to servers or managers
- Support special moments such as celebrations, allergies, and accessibility needs
- Pre-bus and clear tables discreetly and with intention
- Reset tables promptly according to Burl standards
- Assist servers with food and beverage running as needed
- Monitor table readiness and communicate turns to the host stand
- Support proper pacing and flow of service
- Assist in maintaining calm, organized energy on the floor during peak periods
- Assist with pre-service, mid-service, and end-of-shift side work
- Participate in deep cleaning tasks as assigned
- Take ownership of presentation details including floors, chairs, booths, and service stations
- Arrive on time, prepared, and in proper clean and pressed uniform
- Uphold Burl's service philosophy and culture at all times
