Yard Manager

The Yard Manager plays a key leadership role in creating an exceptional customer experience while fostering a positive, motivated, and high-performing yard team. This position is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the lumber yard including but not limited to daily deliveries, customer pick-ups, and receiving. At the heart of this role is a commitment to outstanding customer service and strong staff morale. The Yard Manager supports and coaches team members daily to help them succeed, ensuring productivity goals are met while maintaining a respectful, encouraging work environment.

Customer Service

  • Ensure the highest levels of customer service are achieved with builders, contractors, and do-it-yourself customers.
  • Communicate directly with key clientele to ensure their expectations are being met.
  • Ensure proper resources are allocated to customer pick ups and deliveries.
  • Conduct daily employee check-ins to communicate pertinent information, provide daily direction and ensure peak productivity levels.
  • Routinely coordinate with other managers to ensure optimal operational effectiveness and sharing of resources.
  • Support staff to facilitate prompt settlement of customer complaints and problems.

HR

  • Recruit and develop a winning team to ensure high customer service levels.
  • Identify, develop and train personnel capable of assuming further responsibilities within the company.
  • Create schedules for staff according to store traffic patterns and wage budgets. Manage schedules for vacations, holidays, sick days.
  • Review weekly time sheets
  • Manage onboarding & training plans, facility orientation, training, HR files etc for new and existing staff.
  • Maintain and grow a positive relationship between the yard staff and the sales associates.
  • Create and administer annual performance reviews
  • Take appropriate disciplinary action when employees violate company rules and/or policies. Maintain complete and accurate records of such actions.

Operations

  • Direct the complete operation of the yard while following the guidelines of current company policy.
  • Ensure an efficient and prompt flow of daily deliveries.
  • Provide an environment that encourages high employee productivity and morale.
  • Coordinate and communicate with other managers in other areas (Merchandising, Inventory Control etc.) as required to help achieve overall operational goals
  • Implement all policies, procedures, and objectives as determined by the management team
  • Coordinate with the inventory control team to ensure routine cycle counts are being performed while making ad hoc adjustments as needed

Qualifications

  • Leadership experience in lumber yard or customer service in a related industry
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks
  • Proven management track record leading a successful sales or merchandising team
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends, evenings.
  • Ability to lead and work cooperatively in a team atmosphere.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Work Conditions:

  • Ability to lift 50lbs to 80lbs.
  • Frequent standing, bending, and lifting.
  • Exposure to seasonal weather.
  • Flexibility to work days, evenings, weekends, and overtime as needed.
