Job Description:
RESPONSIBILITIES:
A PROGRAM
1) Know and respond to safety and health care needs of residents
2) Act as a role model for all residents as reflected by appearance, behaviour and attitude
3) Provide support for residents' personal development as decided through individual support planning (ISP)
4) Advocating on residents' behalf/facilitating self-advocacy to community supports in collaboration with colleagues and other healthcare professionals
5) Ensuring learning opportunities are provided utilizing agency and community resources
6) Fostering independence in residents including supervising and assisting residents with meal preparation and clean-up and other daily living skills
7) Administer medication as prescribed and according to policies and procedures
8) Support resident involvement in leisure activities (Christian education, bowling, special events, etc.)
9) Complete/maintain resident records, shift reports and update communication book
10) Follow and promote the agency's and site program goals and philosophy
11) Track, compile, analyze and make recommendations based on resident data
B HOUSEHOLD ORGANIZATION
1) Adhere to site menu plan and food restrictions
2) Ensure the general site appearance is clean and tidy before the shift is completed
3) Maintain and account for use of site and resident monies, TTC tokens, taxi chits and household supplies, etc.
4) Complete daily household routines as required (cooking, groceries, laundry and cleaning, etc.)
PHYSICAL EFFORT/DEXTERITY REQUIRED:
- The performance of the job requires bending/ twisting/lifting of 50 Ibs considerable walking, standing, writing; computer work, and housekeeping.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The incumbent's work environment is typically in a group home facility. The incumbent works under generally agreeable conditions, with the following exceptions:
Exposure to dirt, bodily fluids, bodily waste
Noise
Dealing with angry and abusive people
Verbal abuse Handling garbage
Odours
EXPOSURE TO HAZARDS: The incumbent may be exposed to risk of minor to moderate injury or illnesses due to the following:
Physical attacks by others (i.e., being attacked by a resident)
Exposure to infectious diseases
Exposure to toxic chemicals
Exposure to bodily fluids
Sharp objects
Other dangerous situations
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES: The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to Health and Safety rules):
Universal Precautions
WHMIS Training
First Aid/CPR certification
Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certification
Police/Criminal Reference Check – Vulnerable Sector Screening
NOTE: The position of Residential Counsellor may also encompass the designation of Counsellor-In-Charge (CIC) as described below:
Designation: Counsellor-in-Charge (C.I.C.)
Statement of Purpose: The C.I.C. oversees program needs in the absence of the Residential Manager.
A SHIFT
1) Direct, delegate, coordinate, organize and ensure the completion of shift responsibilities
2) Ensure relevant information is communicated
3) In the event of staffing shortage, C.I.C. is responsible for the coverage of the succeeding shift until back-up staff can arrive.
4) Ensure shift reports and program data are completed and incident reports are completed and forwarded to main office
5) Ensure emergency procedures are followed
Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $23.28 to $29.10 with a maximum of $34.92.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
