The position is County wide but will be based in the Maintenance Shop (Finch Patrol). Under the supervision of the Fleet Supervisor the incumbent will perform all mechanical work related to the maintenance and repair of County owned equipment.
Main duties include but are not limited to:
- Perform mechanical repairs and preventative maintenance to all Municipal equipment and vehicles in compliance with current Provincial regulations.
- Conducts annual safety inspections and emissions testing as required.
- Performs mechanical work on a wide variety of diesel-powered vehicles and heavy equipment, heavy duty gasoline vehicles, pickups, cars, light duty equipment, and related systems.
- Diagnoses and repairs computer systems, fuel injection systems, hydraulic systems, brake systems, electrical systems, suspension systems, and cooling systems of County equipment.
- Overhauls gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, front and rear differentials, transfer cases, and gear boxes.
- Performs major tune-ups of County vehicles.
- Road tests County vehicles to ensure compliance with manufacturer's specifications.
- Keeps current on automobile computer system technology.
- Machines parts, brazes, and welds intricate equipment, snow plows, graders, and special projects for County use.
- Assists supervisor in training and monitoring repair and maintenance activities.
- Analyzes, diagnoses, removes, assembles, adjusts, and replaces defective parts or sub-assemblies.
- Responds to emergency situations on an on-call basis as assigned.
- Ensures that hand tools and power equipment are properly maintained and safe to use.
- Ensures that equipment safety guards are in place and properly adjusted.
- Ensures that safety glasses, face shields, welding helmets and other safety equipment are being used and are kept in good repair.
- Ensures paints, solvents, and other chemicals are used safely and disposed of properly.
- Maintains Material Safety Data Sheet documentation for all materials in the shop.
- Ability to track certification status and maintain records.
- Reviews and provides comment regarding County equipment specifications.
- Follow all Health & Safety policies and procedures and report any non-compliance or any possible safety risks.
- Perform other duties as assigned or required.
Qualifications:
- The County Mechanic must possess a valid Truck and Coach Technician #310T Licence (or be a Class A Mechanic #310S upgrading to #310T status at date of renewal) with diesel endorsement; Minimum Grade 12 education; Five (5) or more years experience in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment; must hold a Class G Driver's Licence.
- Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work activities.
- Knowledge of hazardous chemical handling procedures.
- Knowledge of procedures and techniques used in the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of equipment and vehicles.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards related to mechanical repairs.
- Skill in operating motorized equipment and various hand, pneumatic, and power tools.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Skill in reading, writing, and basic math.
- Ability to coordinate multiple tasks efficiently.
- Ability to provide a current satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
- Ability to provide a current satisfactory Driver's Abstract.
Salary: $36.05/hour (Current Union Rate) plus benefit package and pension
Schedule: 40 hours per week plus potential overtime
