The Scientific Computing Core Internship
The Scientific Computing Core (SCC) manages supercomputing resources and provides high performance computing (HPC) expertise to all centers at the Flatiron Institute, developing tools broadly useful to the scientific community as a whole. SCC is seeking an intern who is interested in high-performance networking of cluster resources. Networks provide the underlying fabrics upon which high-performance computing operates, often limiting performance of key tasks like message passing or filesystem access. Architecting, deploying, and maintaining high performance networks requires both care and precision. The internship will take place in-person at the Simons Foundation's offices in New York City from June 1, 2026

Take on one of several potential projects related to network diagnostics, automation, routine testing, or benchmarking and tuning of either ethernet or InfiniBand fabrics. Perform any other duties or tasks as assigned or required Minimum Qualifications
Education Must be a student enrolled in an accredited graduate degree program Students enrolled in physics, mathematics, computer science, or related disciplines preferred Experience Basic understanding of computer networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, routing, switching, VLANs, DNS, DHCP) Basic knowledge of the Linux command line Familiarity with programming in Python, Julia, or Rust Some experience in HPC and cluster computing topics such as MPI, Slurm is preferred Basic knowledge of Git/GitHub desired Related Skills & Other Requirements Must enjoy working in a research-driven environment Desire to document code and process, deliberative decision-making Strong oral and written communication Excellent collaborative and interpersonal skills Required Application Materials
