About
This clinic will primarily support the Beatrice Humane Society and their shelter animals, but also community cats through TVNR, various rescue groups and other shelters and low income pet owners. The ideal candidate will have experience working in a veterinary hospital, strong communication and teamwork skills, a passion for veterinary medicine and a desire to help the homeless pet population. We require all of our employees to treat animals with respect and compassion, so we have high expectations for our employee's attitudes and behavior.
*Responsibilities:*
* Assist in examination of shelter animals and client owned animals
* Administer pre-medication, induce anesthesia and intubate surgical patients
* Oversee and direct other staff and volunteers as needed
* Prepare animals for surgery
* Place IV catheters
* Monitor anesthetized patients
* Assist in animal emergency triage and resuscitation
* Perform dental cleaning and non-surgical extraction as allowed by state regulations
* Extubate and recover anesthesia patients
* Handle and digitally record controlled substances for large volumes of surgical patients
* Administer prescribed pain medications, antibiotics, antiparasitics and vaccines
* Collect specimens and perform diagnostics as prescribed by BHS veterinarian – common diagnostics include: Fecal exams, Skin scrapes and cytology, DTMs, Wood’s Lamp, Heartworm, FeLV, FIV and parvo tests, UAs. Submit various diagnostics to off-site laboratories as allowed by Nebraska Veterinary Practice Act
* Provide enrichment and stress reduction for animals through humane handling
* Ensure prompt and accurate medical record updates
* Relieve animal suffering and comfort the sick
* Assist in training new staff members, volunteers, veterinary students and interns
* Collaborate with personnel from other BHS departments
* Perform safe and humane euthanasia when necessary. The Beatrice Humane Society prides itself on euthanizing less than 2% of the animals in our care each year, however, we also will never allow an animal to suffer to death and euthanize when lack of treatment options and QOL dictate that as the best option.
* Act as a resource for adopters answering pre and post adoption medical questions
* Maintain clean treatment, surgery and examination areas
* Periodically review, provide input and adhere to medical and shelter protocols
* Assist in the cleaning and sterilization and preparation of surgical equipment
* Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Executive Director or Veterinarian
*Position Qualifications: Education, Experience, Certification, and Knowledge/Skills/Abilities*
*Required*
* HS Diploma or GED
* Associate of Applied Science Degree in Veterinary Technology from an accredited program
* Licensed veterinary technician in the state of Nebraska, or eligible to become licensed within 2 months of hire.
* Must adhere to applicable state and federal laws governing the practice of veterinary medicine
* Must adhere to highest ethical standards; possess trustworthiness, exercise maturity and sound independent judgment while maintaining a professional manner.
* Ability to clearly communicate verbally and in writing
* Must have valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record
* Be comfortable and skilled working with a diverse staff and community
* Must be considerate, respectful and display a helpful demeanor to all employees, volunteers and the public
* Must be able to work cordially, safely and efficiently in face-paced, stressful conditions
* Must possess the ability to cope with loss of animal life from illness, injury and euthanasia

*Desired*
* Two years of veterinary experience preferred
* Previous experience in a shelter and/or high volume spay/neuter
* Familiarity with Microsoft operating systems and computer literate in Microsoft Office and google drive
*Work Conditions:*

* 40 hours scheduled weekly, up to 1-3 weekend days per year for special events
* The noise level in the clinic may include barking or whining of animals and beeping of machines.
* High exposure to animals whose behavioral reactions cannot be predicted including feral animals.
* Temperatures in the clinic are moderate with heating and air-conditioning, but small amounts of time outside of the clinic may result in exposure to Nebraska’s weather that could vary greatly.
* Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases and hazardous chemicals.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
