Position Overview
Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Education Director is responsible for providing programs and services designed to assist students in the community who are attending the AVFN school, support students struggling with academics and assist in the preparation of students for post secondary education.
Duties and Responsibilities
· Oversee daily operations of the AVFN school, including supervising staff, ensuring curriculum objectives are upheld, organizing professional development, enrolling students, and supporting parent and student needs
· Supporting parent and student needs of AVFN students attending provincial schools
· Prepare an annual program forecast, budget and then monitor the budget expenditures
· Develop and coordinate, in consultation with other Mi'kmaw communities' Education Directors and Counselors, a Post Secondary Education Program that reflects the objectives of the Band Council while maintaining standards that are equivalent to the requirements of Universities for enrollment
· Plan and provide information sessions for high school students, parents and adults interested in applying for post-secondary education
· Review application procedures and funding availability
· Research and communicate scholarship and bursary opportunities to students
· Meet individually with students in community to prepare them for the upcoming school year (every August)
· Create and distribute student handbooks and information packages
· Prepare and review student information
· Collaborate across departments as required
· Provide service to students who request support meeting with professors
· Speak to professors on behalf of the students, if requested
· Assist any relevant departments or programs with the development of curriculum and learning outcomes for any training program conducted by AVFN
· Develop and implement a detailed work plan for each fiscal year
· Attend various meetings and participate on committees as required
· Submit a monthly report including a summation of travel expenses reconciled against annual budget to the Executive Director
· Assist with special projects, if required
· Attend staff meetings and any training identified by senior management staff
· Continually seek education and training to remain culturally responsible and sensitive to needs of client(s)
· Other duties, training and activities related to the position, as required
Education/Certification/Experience:
The following qualifications are desired:
· A bachelor's degree in education is preferred, or a bachelor's degree in a related field
· Minimum of 1 year of relevant experience
· Experience working with First Nation / Indigenous communities, First Nation service delivery organizations, and applicable government programming etc.
· Experience working in a fast-paced environment
Position Requirements:
· Strong commitment to the member communities
· Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of Nova Scotia's Mi'kmaw community, its political framework, and administrative/service Programs
· Knowledge of Indigenous culture
· Working knowledge of First Nation Communities, First Nation service delivery organizations, and applicable government programming etc.
· Knowledge of the post secondary system, the Mi'kmaw education system and its contacts
· Ability to apply creativity and innovative thinking to community focused solutions
· Ability to professionally represent AVFN with clients, at meetings and other gatherings
· Demonstrated strong initiative, motivation, conscientiousness and dedication
· Is able to work unsupervised with a high level of productivity with the ability to seek and take direction
· Ability to be adaptable, flexible, manage multiple priorities to ensure clients are well served and relationships are developed and maintained
· Ability to think analytically and critically while problem solving to identify specific needs and potential solutions
· Ability to manage time and various activities effectively and efficiently while providing quality customer service
· Proficient in Google and Microsoft Office Suite, facilitation, presentation and the use of various communication mediums (Meetings, training etc.)
Job Types: Full-time, Permanent
Pay: $60,000.00 per year
