SCOPE:

In this position you will perform skilled and technical work related to administration of the City's Tree Protection Bylaw. Your work will include reviewing tree cutting applications, participating in bylaw compliance investigations, reviewing development applications and tree protection measures for construction. You will also be responsible for growing the City's urban forest by ensuring replacement trees are planted and protected.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Review site plans and landscape plans for development permits and building permits.
- Perform field work related to tree cutting permit applications, building permit applications, landscape inspections and Tree Protection Bylaw offences inspections.
- Perform Tree Risk Assessments.
- Review arborist reports.
- Prepare and maintain expert reports, risk assessments and related documentation.
- Perform job-related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- University Degree or Diploma in Forestry, Arboriculture, Horticulture or a related field from an accredited post-secondary institution.
- Minimum of 3 years' experience in arboriculture-related work, including experience in hazard tree assessment. An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- A practical knowledge of tree biology, insects and diseases.
- Arboriculture field skills are preferred.
- Knowledge of natural area management and riparian areas/sensitive ecosystems.
- Must be a Qualified Tree Risk Assessor from the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA).
- Certified or eligible for certification as a "Certified Arborist" with the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA).
- Superior public relations and interpersonal skills, including dealing with others in stressful situations.
- Strong organization and problem-solving skills.
- An understanding of the City's Tree Protection Bylaw and related regulations.
- A valid BC driver's license and the use of the incumbent's own vehicle for site visits is required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Thorough knowledge of hazard tree assessment.
- Ability to read and interpret surveys, plans, drawings and reports related to the work.
- Possesses excellent working knowledge of related computer programs including but not limited to MS Word, MS Outlook, AMANDA, and ArcView (Cosmo).
