Job Profile
Under the general direction of the Manager of Fleet Maintenance Services, the Supervisor of the Machine Shop is responsible for the supervision, general operation, function and safety of the Winnipeg Fleet Management Agency's Manufacturing and Fabrication location. Serving several user groups and Civic departments, this position plans and directs subordinates to achieve work assignments using established guidelines, procedures, and policies. This includes planning, directing and coordinating the quality maintenance and repairs for a large fleet of diversified City owned and rented equipment in a timely and cost-effective manner. Required to develop/establish, interpret and/or modify operational processes which include providing accurate documentation and reports to reflect machine shop activities. Will develop operating procedures, training programs and participates in the selection, retention, and development of staff. This position requires a high degree of focus on customer service, fiscal awareness, industry safety practices and the ability to lead a program that provides quality and timely work to meet Civic customer needs.
As the Supervisor of Machine Shop , your duties will include:
- Managing the Administration of the Machine Shop Facility and Mobile Field Operations.
- Overseeing Production Planning, Estimating, Scheduling and Quality of Work Performed.
- Overseeing Equipment Purchase, Maintenance & Safety
- Preparing Annual Facility Budget
- Periodically acting as after-hours on call Duty Supervisor
Your Education And Qualifications Include
- Valid Interprovincial Red Seal Welding and/or Machinist Journeyperson Certificate.
- Must have successfully completed the required Red River College Industrial Supervision Program, or at time of hiring be enrolled and have completed more than 50% of the Program with successful full certificate graduation within 18 months of service.
- Canadian Welding Bureau Supervisor training is preferred.
- Experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office Software (or equivalent) including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Experience with financial management including financial planning, budgeting, monitoring and reporting.
- Minimum of three (3) years' experience supervising and leading staff; preferably industrial trades employees.
- Knowledge of technical principles related to welding and machining metals, trade practices and technology.
- Ability to interpret drawings, sketches and specifications.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to complete accurate reports/records.
- Knowledge of applicable City of Winnipeg by-laws.
- Ability to effectively work under minimal supervision, stressful conditions and exercise sound judgement.
- Ability to utilize new welding technology, tools, techniques and computer programs.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards, and workplace safety and health regulations.
- Excellent customer service skills with the ability to deal with conflict while maintaining composure and professionalism.
- IMPORTANT: Applicants who have been educated outside of Canada must have education which is comparable to the minimum qualification in Canada. Applicants submitting foreign credentials require an official academic assessment report issued by a recognized Canadian assessment service at application.
Conditions Of Employment
- The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
- Possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 3 Driver's License with Air Brake Endorsement.
- The successful applicant will be required to provide a vehicle for transportation while on City business, subject to the terms and conditions of the City Transportation Policy.
- Be able to obtain and maintain level 2 Police clearances.
- A Police Record Check satisfactory to the employer will be required from the applicant(s) or successful candidate(s), at their expense.
- Must be physically able to perform the duties including working indoors, outdoors in various weather conditions, with the ability to work at varying heights and in confined spaces.
