Position Description:
As a Polysomnographic Technologist, you will perform polysomnographic sleep studies with patients who are experiencing a variety of sleep disorders.

Job duties overview:

  1. Patient Preparation:

a. Greet and prepare patients for sleep studies.

b. Explain procedures and equipment to patients, ensuring their comfort and understanding.

  1. Electrode Placement:

a. Apply electrodes and sensors to various parts of the patient's body to monitor brain activity, eye movements, muscle tone, heart rate, and other physiological parameters.

  1. Monitoring and Data Collection:

a. Monitor patients throughout the sleep study, recording data on Sandman Elite.

b. Continuously observe and document patient behaviors during sleep, including sleep stages, breathing patterns, and movement.

  1. Equipment Maintenance:

a. Maintain and calibrate sleep monitoring equipment to ensure accurate readings.

b. Troubleshoot and address technical issues as they arise during the study.

  1. Patient Safety:

a. Ensure the safety and well-being of patients throughout the night.

b. Respond promptly to any emergency situations or medical issues that may arise.

  1. Data Analysis:

a. Analyze collected data to identify sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, insomnia, and narcolepsy.

b. Prepare detailed reports for physicians and other healthcare professionals.

  1. Diagnostic and Titration PSG studies:

a. Conduct diagnostic, MSLT (Multiple Sleep Latency Test), MWT (Maintenance Wakefulness Test), CPAP Titration (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) and Bi-Level studies to optimize treatment for patients with sleep disordered breathing.

  1. Patient Education:

a. Educate patients about sleep disorders, the importance of compliance with treatment plans, and lifestyle changes that may improve sleep quality.

  1. Documentation:

a. Maintain accurate records of patient information, sleep study results, and treatment recommendations.

  1. Quality Assurance:

a. Follow established protocols and guidelines to ensure the quality and accuracy of sleep studies.

b. Adhere to ethical and professional standards in patient care.

c. Ensure inventory lists are completed.

  1. Collaboration:

a. Collaborate with technicians to gain a better understanding of treatment plans for patients.

  1. Continuing Education:

a. Attend training sessions to maintain certification and enhance skills.

  1. Compliance:

a. Ensure that all procedures and practices comply with healthcare regulations and facility policies.

  1. Patient Comfort and Support:

a. Provide support to patients undergoing sleep studies and address any concerns they may have.

  1. Shift Work:

a. Work varying shifts, including nights and weekends, to accommodate the scheduling needs.

  1. Patient Education:

a. Facilitating structured education sessions and providing patient-centered care to support quality improvement and promote best clinical practices.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to work overnight shifts, a minimum of 12 hours per shift, 3 nights per week.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills combined with excellent patient care skills and service excellence attitude.
  • Post-secondary diploma.
  • Strong communication and troubleshooting skills, and ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Current RPSGT and CPR certification or student-in-training preferred.
  • Technologist experience preferred.
