WORK HOURS: 8:00 AM TO 5:00 PM

The Senior Network Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the city’s network infrastructure. This role ensures the stability and integrity of in-house and cloud-based network services, including planning, developing, installing, configuring, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing all network hardware, software, and communication links. The Senior Network Engineer will also analyze and resolve network hardware and software problems in a timely and accurate fashion and provide end-user training where required.

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

  1. Design and deploy functional networks (LAN, WLAN, WAN)
  2. Configure and install various network devices and services (e.g., routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, VPN, QoS)
  3. Monitor network performance and ensure system availability and reliability
  4. Monitor and maintain daily backups
  5. Diagnose and troubleshoot network problems and outages
  6. Perform network maintenance and system upgrades including service packs, patches, hot fixes, and security configurations
  7. Monitor system resource utilization, trending, and capacity planning
  8. Provide support and troubleshooting to resolve issues
  9. Work within established configuration and change management policies to ensure awareness, approval, and success of changes made to the network infrastructure
  10. Develop and maintain installation, operations, and configuration procedures.
  11. Select and implement security tools, policies, and procedures in conjunction with the city’s security team
  12. Liaise with vendors and other IT personnel for problem resolution
  13. Provide technical support after normal work hours when necessary.
  14. Mentor and train junior network engineering staff
  15. Consistently provide excellent customer service.
  16. Ability to write reports and procedure manuals.
  17. Project lead for the planning and implementation of all Network IT Projects.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field
  2. Minimum of 5 years of experience in network administration and engineering
  3. Professional certifications such as CCNP, CCIE, or equivalent
  4. Strong understanding of network infrastructure and network hardware
  5. Ability to implement, administer, and troubleshoot network infrastructure devices, including wireless access points, firewall, routers, switches, controllers
  6. Knowledge of application transport and network infrastructure protocols
  7. Ability to create accurate network diagrams and documentation for design and planning network communication systems
  8. Proven experience with network capacity planning, network security principles, and general network management best practices
  9. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  10. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Advanced certifications in network security
  2. Experience working in a government or public sector environment
  3. Familiarity with cloud networking solutions and services
  4. Familiarity with Cisco DNA and ISE

Mathematics:

Language Ability:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Skills:

  1. Strong Knowledge of networking technologies including TCP/IP, IPSEC, Routing protocols, 802.1x.
  2. Skills in Cisco Router and Switch configuration and TCP/IP planning.
  3. Skills in Cisco Hardware, Cisco IOS, TCP/IP, Networking and Troubleshooting.
  4. Strong Knowledge of Cisco Pix Firewalls, Remote Access/VPN, Configuring, Security and monitoring Skills in Microsoft Server and Desktop Operating Systems, Exchange Server.
  5. Strong Knowledge in Microsoft Active Directory, Roles, Deployment, Maintaining and Support. Ability to engineer high level network and engineering solutions using open standard technology. Ability to engineer, integrate and support a switched layer 2 environment.
  6. Ability to engineer, integrate and support a layer 3 Inter Vlan routed infrastructure.
  7. Ability to engineer, integrate and support multiple routing protocols including BGP, OSPF and EIGRP.
  8. Ability to engineer, integrate and support Spanning Tree Protocol in a multi-vendor bridged environment.
  9. Ability to engineer, integrate and support Lan, WAN and Metro wireless networks to include best practices and standards.
  10. Ability to engineer, integrate and support VMware virtualized environments in a clustered SAN solution.
  11. Ability to engineer, integrate and support iSCSI storage area networks. Ability to read and interpret technical computer manuals.
  12. Ability to work independently, or with minimum amount of supervision and achieve high performance levels despite frequent distractions and interruptions.
  13. Extensive knowledge of principles and methods applied to information technology infrastructure, planning, implementation, and management.
  14. Extensive knowledge of the body of available and current information resources applicable to the department's functions for technical research purposes and for special projects as may be assigned.
  15. Ability to organize work, establish priorities, meet established deadlines, and follow up on assignments with minimum direction.
  16. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, division and department heads, public/private sector contacts, and County Administration.
  17. Ability to clearly communicate information both verbally and in writing.
  18. Extensive knowledge of the methods, tools, and techniques applied to diverse IT Support in complex multi-platform networked environments.
  19. Extensive knowledge of various current technologies relevant to existing applications, systems, and/or upcoming installations, e.g., voice/data network technologies.

Reasoning:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
