Job Summary

The Early Childhood Exceptional Education (ECSE) Paraprofessional provides instructional, behavioral, and personal support to young learners with disabilities in an early childhood education setting under the direct supervision of a licensed teacher. This position assists with the daily management of the classroom and supports the implementation of individualized education programs (IEPs), early learning standards, and developmentally appropriate practices. Overall performance is evaluated by the building principal.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists teachers with individual and small group instruction aligned to early childhood learning standards and IEP goals.
  • Supports students with disabilities in meeting instructional, behavioral, and personal care needs, including toileting, feeding, lifting, and mobility assistance as needed.
  • Implements teacher-directed activities that promote language development, social-emotional growth, and early academic skills.
  • Reinforces instruction through play-based learning, hands-on activities, and guided practice.
  • Assists with classroom management and implementation of behavior intervention plans.
  • Supervises and escorts students in classrooms, playgrounds, cafeterias, and off-site activities.
  • Monitors student progress and reports observations to the teacher.
  • Prepares instructional materials and maintains classroom organization and learning centers.
  • Supports a safe, nurturing, and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Participates in required training and professional development, including safety and student support strategies.
  • Models nondiscriminatory practices in all interactions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the principal or designee.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Must meet Virginia Department of Education "highly qualified" paraprofessional requirements by meeting one of the following:
    • Completion of at least 60 college credit hours from an accredited institution;
    • An associate's degree or higher; or
    • A passing score of 455 or higher on the Praxis ParaPro Assessment.
  • Experience working with young children, preferably in an early childhood or special education setting, preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions and work collaboratively with staff.
  • Knowledge of child development and early learning practices preferred.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, sit, bend, stoop, kneel, and lift young children.
  • May be required to lift or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Duties may involve assisting students with personal care and hygiene needs.
  • Requires the ability to see, hear, speak, and actively engage with students throughout the day.
Work Environment

Work is performed in an early childhood education classroom setting designed to support young learners. The environment is active, hands-on, and student-centered, with a moderate noise level.
