Position Summary SIRIS, LLC is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Electrical Engineer Subject Matter Expert (SME) to support Construction and Facility Management (CFM) projects at VA Medical Hospitals across the United States on a remote basis.
This position serves as an Owner’s Representative and advisory capacity, providing independent technical oversight without performing contractor or trade execution work. The Electrical Engineer applies sound engineering judgment to evaluate project performance, ensure regulatory compliance, and advise program leadership and VA stakeholders. This role does not require stamping or approving design documents but focuses on technical review and guidance.
The proposed Electrical Engineer will have experience supporting complex construction projects in healthcare and/or federal environments (e.g., VA, DoD, USACE, GSA), including:
technical studies—to ensure compliance with National Electrical Code, National Fire Protection Association standards, VA Design Guides, and federal healthcare facility requirements.
Conduct comprehensive site inspections and condition assessments of electrical systems, including power distribution, emergency/backup power, lighting, grounding and bonding, and life-safety infrastructure; documented detailed findings and actionable recommendations.
Perform advanced technical analyses such as electrical load studies, short-circuit analyses, arc flash assessments, equipment sizing evaluations, and system capacity studies to support safe and efficient system performance.
Identify system deficiencies, evaluated associated risks, and developed corrective action plans and upgrade recommendations to enhance compliance, reliability, and operational safety.
Review contractor submittals, shop drawings, Requests for Information (RFIs), and proposed contract modifications to ensure technical accuracy, code compliance, and alignment with design intent.
Provide engineering support across all project phases, including design development, construction, commissioning, and project closeout.
Prepare engineering evaluations, technical memoranda, and formal recommendations related to electrical system design, construction, and facility operations.
Support prioritization of system upgrades, asset replacement planning, and risk mitigation strategies for VA healthcare facilities.
Coordinate with stakeholders—including Construction and Facility Management (CFM) and the Veterans Health Administration—to communicate technical issues, validate design intent, and ensure adherence to applicable codes, standards, and project requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Provide electrical engineering expertise to support CFM and VHA programs across design, construction, maintenance, and facility operations
Review technical documentation (drawings, specifications, calculations, reports, and submittals) and provide detailed written comments and recommendations
Evaluate compliance with applicable codes, standards (NEC, NFPA), and VA design criteria, including providing technical interpretation
Review RFIs, submittals, change proposals, and contractor documentation for technical accuracy and compliance
Support all project phases, including planning, design, construction, commissioning, and closeout
Healthcare Environment Considerations Given the work occurs within an active VA medical facility, the Electrical Engineer will support:
Patient safety and infection control compliance
Coordination of utility shutdowns and facility impacts
Noise and dust mitigation strategies
Phasing plans to maintain uninterrupted hospital operations
Education & Experience Education
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited institution is required.
PE License REQUIRED
Experience
The individual must possess a minimum of six (6) years of combined experience in both design and construction
Experience supporting healthcare, federal, or institutional projects is highly desirable
Candidates may be asked to provide examples or documentation of completed projects demonstrating relevant experience.

Ability to exercise independent judgment in administrative, financial, and compliance matters
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat
Strong written, verbal, and organizational communication skills
Employment contingent upon successful completion of background checks and VA suitability requirements
