Role Overview As an Engineering Manager, you will lead the expanding MAAS team, delivering the Metal as a Service platform that brings cloud‑style, on‑demand API provisioning to private bare‑metal infrastructure. MAAS is a rapidly evolving stack written in Python and Go, spanning hardware detection, provisioning, web interface, API, and CLI.
Responsibilities
Lead a distributed engineering team organized by time zone (Americas, EMEA, etc.)
Develop and mentor talent through coaching, feedback, and career planning
Manage expectations with other engineering teams, senior management, and external stakeholders
Advocate and advance modern software development practices
Participate in engineering process through code and architectural reviews
Engage with broader teams at Canonical, the open‑source community, and partners
Travel to internal and external global events for 4 to 6 weeks per year
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science or related field
Proven experience delivering software with Python, Golang, or similar languages
Experience with Linux system administration (Debian or Ubuntu preferred)
Familiarity with modern Linux cloud computing technologies – networking, storage, containers, and K8s
Technical aptitude for complex distributed systems
Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills
Experience with agile software development methodologies
Ability to mentor, develop, and support team membersResult‑oriented with a personal drive to meet commitments
Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events up to two weeks long
Nice‑to‑Have Skills
Typescript and modern web frameworks (React, Angular, Svelte, Vue)
Data center infrastructure management and design
