*Role Overview *
The Network Engineer is responsible for the day-to-day management, optimisation, and operational delivery of customer network environments across both AWS and physical infrastructure. While AWS and cloud networking form a significant part of customer estates, this role also has a strong emphasis on remote management of physical networks, switches, firewalls, and access infrastructure.
The role ensures that customer networks are secure, resilient, well-documented, and aligned with best practice, while delivering exceptional service experiences consistent with IT Naturally’s ISO 20000-aligned service standards and B Corporation values.
A key part of this role is curiosity and ownership. We are looking for someone keen to learn, investigate existing environments, and proactively document how things work, using their own initiative to improve visibility, resilience, and operational maturity.
The key purpose of the role is to.
* Own the operational and networking aspects of customer AWS and on-premises environments, ensuring stability, high availability, and secure connectivity.
* Act as a trusted technical partner, advising customers on cloud, physical, and hybrid network design, optimisation, and integration.
* Take ownership of understanding customer environments, identifying gaps in documentation, and proactively creating and maintaining accurate network diagrams and technical documentation.
* Support IT Naturally’s 24/7 managed service delivery with proactive monitoring, incident response, and continuous improvement.
*Role Responsibilities *
_*Network Operations *_

* Working in partnership with the Senior Network Engineers, design, implement, and manage AWS networking components, including VPCs, subnets, route tables, NAT gateways, security groups, NACLs, Transit Gateways, Direct Connect, and VPNs.
* Manage and support physical network infrastructure, including switches, firewalls, and wireless networks across customer sites and data centres.
* Configure, operate, and troubleshoot Cisco and Fortinet switches and firewalls, including routing, VLANs, high-availability configurations, and site-to-site and client VPNs.
* Support and maintain Extreme Networks switches and Extreme access points, including wireless configuration, performance optimisation, and fault resolution.
* Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimise network performance, availability, and capacity across cloud and physical environments.
* Ensure resilience, redundancy, and secure connectivity across hybrid network designs.
* Investigate existing customer environments, proactively identifying undocumented configurations, risks, and improvement opportunities.
* Create and maintain clear network documentation, including diagrams, configuration records, and operational runbooks.
_*Security & Compliance *_
* Implement and maintain network security best practices across cloud and physical infrastructure, including firewall policies, segmentation, encryption, monitoring, and logging.
* Work closely with IT Naturally’s Cyber Security team to meet embedded security standards and customer compliance requirements, including ISO 20000, ISO 27001, and Cyber Essentials.
* Ensure all network changes follow IT Naturally’s change management processes, with clear technical documentation and impact assessment.
_*Automation & Continuous Improvement*_
* Support Senior Network Engineers by contributing to automation and Infrastructure-as-Code used for network provisioning, configuration, monitoring, and maintenance, including Terraform and CloudFormation
* Proactively identify opportunities to improve network reliability, resilience, and operational consistency.
_*Service Delivery & Customer Experience *_
* Participate in proactive internal quarterly business reviews, providing clear recommendations for network optimisation, resilience, and future improvement.
* Support incident resolution and technical escalations, acting as a senior point of expertise for networking-related issues.
* Provide transparent reporting and updates aligned with IT Naturally’s service management standards.
_*Collaboration & Support *_
* Work closely with Platform, Cyber Security, EUC and Operations teams to deliver cohesive, end-to-end managed services.
* Participate in a 24/7 on-call rota to maintain service continuity.
* Collaborate with customers to integrate AWS networking with on-premises infrastructure and wider hybrid network solutions.
*Role Requirements *
_*Required Skills & Experience *_

* Strong experience managing physical network infrastructure, including switches, firewalls, and wireless networks.

* Experience supporting Extreme Networks switches and access points.
* Deep understanding of AWS networking services, including VPCs, subnets, route tables, NAT, security groups, NACLs, Transit Gateways, Direct Connect, and VPNs.
* Solid understanding of hybrid networking, routing, and secure connectivity between cloud and on-premises environments.
* Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code and automation, such as Terraform, CloudFormation, Python, or Bash. Monitoring and observability experience across cloud and physical networks using tools such as CloudWatch, Zabbix, or DataDog.
* Strong documentation skills, with a proactive approach to discovering, documenting, and improving customer environments.
* Clear communication skills and a methodical approach to troubleshooting and problem-solving.
_*Desirable *_
* AWS Advanced Networking certification or equivalent practical experience
* Experience integrating Fortinet firewalls and VPNs with AWS environments.
* Experience working in ISO-certified service environments, including ISO 20000 and ISO 27001.
