Assignment Summary / Purpose
The Senior Engineer will focus on instrumentation and control (I&C) system design for commercial nuclear power plants and test facilities. Responsibilities include working with reactor protection safety-related systems (Safety Class 1 – SC1), regulatory treatment of non-safety systems (SC2), plant investment protection systems (SC3), and non-safety balance of plant (BOP) systems. The role supports advanced nuclear technologies including: Advanced Light Water Reactors (ALWR) Advanced Liquid Metal Reactors (ALMR) Advanced High Temperature Gas Reactors (AHTGR) Identify, develop, evaluate, introduce, and manage engineering solutions for instrumentation and control (I&C) systems. Responsibilities
Apply control theory, mathematical modeling, and simulation to design control systems with desired behaviors including:
Control logic functionality across operating modes Boundary settings and optimization Closed-loop or feedback control algorithms Sensor systems, hardware, and software development Complex systems analysis
Design and support software and hardware solutions for Reactor Protection Systems – SC1, Regulatory Treatment of Non-Safety Systems – SC2, Plant Investment Protection Systems – SC3, and Balance of Plant Non-Safety Systems. Lead or support design phases including:
Front End Engineering Design (FEED) Conceptual Design Preliminary / Intermediate Design Detailed / Final Design
Prepare and maintain engineering deliverables using data-centric digital engineering tools, including technical reports and specifications, databases and functional tables, equipment and instrumentation characteristics, electrical and heat load documentation, equipment layouts and configuration management. Develop engineering drawings and diagrams such as functional block diagrams, sequential flow diagrams, digital logic diagrams, communication and networking diagrams. Develop and maintain dynamic simulation and modeling tools for physics-based and logic-based system design. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to achieve reliability, availability, and maintainability (RAM) goals using FMEA, PRA. Support supplier engagement including procurement packages, technical requirements, and system implementation. Oversee supplier testing activities including unit, module, and system testing, integration testing, and factory acceptance testing (FAT) for distributed control systems (DCS). Provide leadership and mentoring within engineering teams while maintaining a focus on safety, quality, and operational excellence. Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Nuclear, Computer Science, Software, Systems Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, or related technical field. 10+ years of experience in heavy industries such as Nuclear, Process, Marine, Oil & Gas, Aerospace, Military, Medical or pharmaceutical sectors. 10+ years experience developing system design requirements, specifications, and detailed engineering documentation. Extensive experience using digital engineering tools to create drawings, databases, functional tables, equipment and instrumentation configurations, electrical load and layout documentation. 10+ years experience creating engineering diagrams including functional blocks, logic diagrams, wiring diagrams, and communication network diagrams.
