Phlebotomist Serves patients by identifying the best method for retrieving specimens; preparing specimens for laboratory testing; performing screening procedures. Laboratory services must meet professionally approved standards according to state & federal law. Essential functions of this job include but are not limited to:
Supporting the mission, vision, and core values of the organization. Performing phlebotomy and other collection procedures according to standard operating procedures. Obtaining blood specimens from patients per laboratory orders by performing venipunctures and finger sticks, process medical laboratory tests and document results. Communicating with and assisting patients in a professional and courteous manner. Reviewing the laboratory schedule and verifying and completing orders. Identifying the patient and confirming the correct patient record. Monitoring and resolving orders in the electronic medical record. Completing appropriate laboratory forms documenting tests performed and providing diagnoses correlating to tests performed. Completing lab requisition forms and producing appropriate labels for forms and specimen tubes. Entering patient demographics, tests performed and diagnoses correlating to tests performed in the EMR. Ordering and maintaining adequate laboratory supplies. Maintaining records and documentation for proficiency testing and to meet COLA and CLIA requirements and regulations. Greeting and directing visitors and patients. Answering phone calls and providing routine approved information. Working with technologists to provide efficient delivery of accurate lab results. Maintaining a neat and clean work environment. Working with other hospital staff members to provide quality patient care and maintain a positive, professional working environment. Providing for patients'/significant others' or legal representative rights and safety & notifications; striving to manage situations in a manner to reduce risk while following legal, regulatory, federal and state standards. Providing a safe environment by monitoring blood exposure of staff and patients; keeping free from hazards for patients and personnel. Initiating, interpreting and enforcing Laboratory Services procedures and maintaining and interpreting hospital policies and procedures. Confididentiality – maintaining patient, team member and employer confidentiality. Complying with all HIPAA regulations. Functioning as a contributing team member & communicating effectively with all levels of people. Promoting positive public relations to physicians, patients, visitors, other employees, and the community. Performing other tasks and duties as assigned in an efficient, effective and cost conscious manner, complying with all hospital policies, procedures, and regulations.
Physical demands / working conditions: May be exposed to patient elements, prolonged, extensive or considerable standing/walking, sitting, bending/twisting, kneeling/squatting, reaching, climbing and should be able to lift 25 or more pounds using proper lifting techniques. Rapidly changing and stressful environment. Ability to communicate with various levels of people. Possible exposure to communicable and infectious disease and hazardous materials. Occasional exposure to unpleasant patient or unit elements (accidents, injuries and illness). Contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances. Subject to varying and unpredictable situations. Handles emergency or crisis situations. Subject to many interruptions. Occasional pressure due to multiple tasks and inquiries. Qualifications Knowledge, skills, qualification and educational and/or experience requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent Completion of an approved phlebotomy program preferred Certification preferred 6-12 months hospital setting preferred Ability to:
Determine appropriate course of action in more complex situations Work independently, exercise creativity, be attentive to detail, and maintain a positive attitude Manage multiple and simultaneous responsibilities and to prioritize scheduling of work Maintain confidentiality of all medical, financial, and legal information Complete work assignments accurately and in a timely manner Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing/electronically Handle difficult situations involving patients, physicians, or others in a professional manner
Provide excellent customer service skills and basic computer skills required Possesses good interpersonal skills, initiative, integrity, flexibility, adaptability, and must be a team player
