Description: We are seeking an experienced RN for our ICU. The facility has 637 licensed beds and holds a Level 1 Trauma Designation. It also functions as a teaching hospital and is equipped as a Chest Pain Center and Stroke Center.
The ICU includes multiple units with 10-20 beds each. Common patient types and diagnoses include critical care patients with conditions such as DKA, sepsis, respiratory, kidney, and liver failure, as well as GI bleeds. Travelers may also care for surgical and trauma patients, including those from motor vehicle accidents, gunshot wounds, stabbings, and falls. Experience with neuro surgeries and monitoring is essential for neuro ICU cases. Cardiovascular ICU cases may include MIs and STEMIs but will not encompass fresh open hearts or advanced cardiac devices.
Patient ratios are as follows: ICU: 1:1-2 (occasionally 1:3 depending on acuity) PCU: 1:3-4 LPN: 1:4-6
Nursing skills required include trach care, chest tube management, and essential IV skills. Travelers are expected to manage common drips including insulin, heparin, narcotics, and vasopressors. All travelers must pass an EKG competency exam during onboarding.
Supportive staff includes CNAs who assist with vitals, patient safety, and basic care tasks. A Unit Secretary is available during specific hours, and Charge Nurses may take patient assignments on nights and weekends. Available resources in the department include RT, Hospitalist, and Intensivist staff available 24/7. ICU staff are responsible for patient telemetry monitoring, ensuring continuous observation.
Travelers will be utilized in a float pool capacity and will be required to float to various units as needed. Essential teamwork and collaboration are emphasized in this busy unit environment.
