Licensed Practical Nurse Candidates must have been legal residents of Livingston County or New York State for at least four months immediately preceding the date of the application. The work involves the routine care of patients in accordance with a detailed and well-defined patient care plan. In a skilled nursing facility, the Licensed Practical Nurse works under the direct supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse. Assignments concerning patient care are specifically provided with limited leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment. Supervision of subordinates will vary with the type of facility providing the patient/resident services. Does related work as required. Examples of duties include:
Preparing, administering and recording medications according to the physician's order and medication policies of the facility; Carrying out uncomplicated therapeutic treatments such as giving enemas, preparing and applying simple dressings and administering certain medications in accordance with established policy; Assisting in or actively implementing the nursing care plan for patients/residents; Taking the temperature, noting the rate of pulse and respiration, and observing and recording other signs and symptoms as directed; Collecting specimens and obtaining cultures and assisting in carrying out diagnostic procedures under supervision; Assisting in the admission and discharge of patients; Assisting patients in performing ambulation exercises and maintaining proper joint motion; Caring for equipment used in care of patients as directed; and Performing other related duties as required.
Full performance knowledge, skills, abilities and personal characteristics include working knowledge of nursing techniques and their relation to medical and surgical practices; working knowledge of hospital sanitation and hygiene; ability to carry out therapeutic treatments prescribed; ability to understand and carry out exactly detailed oral and written instructions; ability to keep records and make reports; ability to get along well with patients and others; cheerfulness; good moral character; patience; emotional stability; and physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. Typical qualifications include:
Graduation from a nursing education program registered by the New York State Education Department as licensure qualifying no more than 90 days prior to submission of an application for employment. Possession of a New York State license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse. License must be maintained in good standing throughout employment. Must obtain licensure from the New York State Department of Education within 90 days of graduation from the nursing education program to be eligible for continuing employment.
Note: Livingston County residency is not a requirement for this position. However, Livingston County residents will be given preference in the hiring process.
