Job Summary Wytheville Community College is hiring a Network Security Administrator (Info Technology Specialist I) to manage the college’s data, voice, and video network infrastructure. The position is full‑time, nonexempt, and located in Wytheville – 197. Pay range: $46,000‑$60,000. The role is sensitive and requires secure handling of information.
Responsibilities
Conduct advanced engineering, administration, and support of wired and wireless networking systems, firewalls, VPN technologies, Microsoft Teams Voice services, and electronic communications platforms.
Monitor, maintain, and enhance network performance across all campus and remote locations, installing, configuring, and supporting routers, switches, firewalls, wireless access points, network security appliances, and cloud‑connected services.
Ensure network availability, manage system documentation, and support disaster recovery and business continuity initiatives.
Implement and enforce cybersecurity policies, procedures, and technical controls, including security monitoring, vulnerability assessments, incident response, identity and access management, multi‑factor authentication administration, and compliance with FERPA, HIPAA, PCI‑DSS, NIST, ISO 27001, and other regulations.
Provide advanced technical support for endpoint devices and collaborate with faculty and staff to determine technology needs, deploying, configuring, and maintaining computer hardware, software, and network‑access resources.
Serve as a subject‑matter expert for network and security technologies, working collaboratively with IT Services staff, VCCS personnel, and external vendors.
Participate in special assignments as requested, including assistance in emergency situations.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required; experience and education equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, cybersecurity, or related field preferred.
Demonstrated experience installing, configuring, and supporting enterprise network infrastructure (routers, switches, wireless systems, firewalls, VPNs, security appliances).
Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, routing and switching protocols, internet security principles, and cybersecurity best practices.
Experience administering Microsoft 365, Azure / Entra ID, and cloud‑based services such as Meraki, Juniper.
Experience with security tools such as firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems, vulnerability scanners, endpoint protection platforms, or SIEM solutions.
Experience supporting compliance initiatives and implementing security controls related to industry standards and regulatory requirements.
Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem‑solving skills; ability to manage service requests using an IT ticketing system and prioritize multiple projects.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Industry certifications such as CompTIA Network+, Security+, CCNA, CISSP, Juniper or Palo Alto certifications are preferred.
Experience with identity and access management, MFA, and Varonis is a plus.
Other Information Vehicle operation required; may need to travel to other WCC off‑site locations.
