Job Summary The Pima County Information Technology Department is seeking a motivated and detail‑oriented Data Engineer II to support data analysis, reporting, and business intelligence initiatives. The role involves creating, maintaining, and supporting reporting solutions, databases, and analytical tools to improve decision‑making across county departments. Location & Employment This is an in‑office position located in Tucson, AZ and cannot be remote. The Information Technology Department is unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position. Essential Functions Serve as a subject‑matter expert for reporting tools, data analysis, and process improvement initiatives. Develop, maintain, and support reports, dashboards, and data solutions using industry‑standard tools. Analyze business requirements and collaborate with stakeholders to deliver effective reporting and data‑driven solutions. Participate in database design, development, and administration activities. Create and maintain technical documentation related to reporting and data analysis. Perform data engineering and analytical tasks independently or as part of a team. Plan, develop, and maintain relational databases over a variety of database platforms. Participate in the development of database requirements and design specifications. Model database systems, transform database models and entities into database objects, and implement database changes based on application development or enhancements. Install database management systems (DBMS) software, application software, and other software related to DBMS administration. Monitor and administer DBMS security using appropriate protocols. Conduct system administration of database servers to function optimally with the DBMS. Write and maintain database documentation appropriate to area of assignment. Monitor storage, archiving, backup and recovery procedures to ensure functionality and operability, and conduct capacity planning. Develop custom or ad hoc reports using industry‑standard tools. Responsible for other duties as assigned in support of the overall goals and functions of both the Human Resources Department and Pima County. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, management information systems (MIS), or a closely‑related field, plus four years of experience in software development and maintenance and two years of development and maintenance of database systems. Associate’s degree in a related field, six years of experience in IT software development and maintenance and two years of database system development and maintenance. Three years of experience with Pima County in a Data Engineer I position or closely related classification. Preferred Qualifications Minimum two (2) years of experience coding in SQL, C#, Java, or Python. Minimum two (2) years of experience planning and creating new applications to completion and working on data layer/business logic/UI. Minimum two (2) years of experience using Git for version control and Jira for issue tracking and project management. Minimum two (2) years of experience with database platforms such as Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, or Snowflake. Minimum two (2) years of experience developing dashboards and analytical reports using leading tools, including Power BI, Qlik Sense, Tableau, Domo, Workday, and SAP BusinessObjects. Licenses and Certificates Valid driver’s license is required at time of application. Valid AZ driver’s license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39‑month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine suitability to operate county vehicles. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Physical and Sensory Requirements Frequently required to lift, push or pull objects weighing up to 100 pounds. Working Conditions Action activity – none. Motion activity – grasping. Hearing activity – in noisy areas, behind the employee and equipment alarms. Speaking activity – in person and on the phone.
