About

Zipline operates the world's largest drone delivery service, delivering critical medical supplies and essential goods across four continents. As an Embedded Software Engineer Intern, you will join the Embedded Systems team to develop firmware, device drivers, and real-time software for autonomous aircraft and ground systems that directly impact global logistics and healthcare delivery.
What You’ll Do
Design, develop, and deploy embedded software and firmware for autonomous aircraft and ground systems, including real-time coprocessors and Linux camera subsystems
Build and validate RF radio test setups, antenna performance validation systems, and manufacturing software test suites integrated with Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) and simulation
Develop telemetry systems using ADCs, I2C devices, and GPIO interrupts running on real-time operating systems, with accompanying data analysis and validation tools
Prototype and iterate on perception systems by integrating compute modules and sensor prototypes, conducting bench‑top and flight-test validation
Work cross-functionally with mechanical, electrical, and operations teams to improve ground systems behavior, implement changes, and roll out updates to global operations
What You Need
Currently pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Computer Engineering, with at least second‑year undergraduate standing completed (Master’s and PhD students also eligible)
Experience designing, building, or deploying electromechanical systems or robots inside or outside the classroom
Proficiency in at least one of: C, C++, Python, or Rust, with demonstrated experience developing software for a real-time operating system or embedded Linux
Familiarity with basic electrical engineering concepts including schematic reading, oscilloscope debugging, and communication protocols such as CAN, SPI, and UART
Willingness to receive feedback and write efficient, readable, well‑tested code with clean APIs and minimal technical debt
$54 per hour, full-time internship. Additional benefits may include relocation support, housing stipend, overtime pay, and paid sick time where applicable and subject to local requirements.
