Opportunity Story
This is more than just a backend role-it's a chance to build the foundation of a groundbreaking privacy-first product that will serve enterprise and institutional clients. The company has secured one of the largest seed rounds in tech history, with backing from major venture capital firms, giving you the resources and runway to do ambitious work. You'll be part of a small, elite engineering team where every person has true ownership over critical infrastructure, and your decisions will directly shape the product's future.
Your primary mission will be to design, build, and scale high-throughput, low-latency backend services from the ground up. You'll own distributed systems that must handle massive data volumes with unwavering reliability, collaborating across mobile and frontend teams to create seamless API and SDK boundaries. This role also involves building durable caching layers, leading enterprise features like SSO and SCIM, and hardening production systems alongside security engineers. Every day, you'll push the limits of performance and security on a product that demands the highest standards.
We're looking for an engineer who has already proven they can take a system from concept to production in a fast-moving environment-ideally someone with 3+ years of deep backend experience, strong proficiency in Rust, Go, or C/C++, and a track record of end-to-end ownership. You care deeply about reliability, observability, and long-term maintainability, and you want your work to matter beyond just shipping features. Candidates who have worked on privacy-focused or high-compliance products will find themselves right at home, but what matters most is your hunger to solve hard problems and your commitment to craftsmanship.
If you're ready to help build systems that redefine what's possible in privacy and reliability, apply today. This is a unique opportunity to join a well-funded, early-stage company at a pivotal moment, earn top-tier compensation plus meaningful equity, and collaborate with a team that values integrity and long-term thinking. Don't miss your chance to have a massive impact-submit your application now and let's start the conversation.
Non-Negotiables
You must have at least 3 years of experience building and operating high-throughput, distributed backend systems in production You must have a strong systems engineering background with a track record of owning critical services end-to-end, from design through operations You must be proficient in at least one of: Rust, Go, or C/C++, and be willing to work primarily in a systems language You must have experience taking systems from concept to production (0→1) in fast-paced environments such as early-stage startups You must demonstrate a deep focus on reliability, observability, and performance, caring about metrics, failure modes, and long-term maintainability You must be authorized to work in the U.S. without visa sponsorship, as sponsorship is not available You must be able to work on-site in New York, with an in-office schedule most days of the week, and relocate if not already local What's In It For You
Competitive cash compensation between $250,000 and $350,000 annually, reflecting the upper end of market rates for senior backend engineers Meaningful equity stake in a high-growth, early-stage company building mission-critical infrastructure Work on greenfield architecture and build next-generation backend systems from scratch, directly impacting a privacy-focused product line Join a small, senior engineering team where every engineer has significant product and architectural ownership and your voice shapes technical direction The company recently raised one of the largest seed rounds in tech, backed by top-tier VCs, providing strong funding and stability Culture that values integrity, curiosity about technology, and long-term craftsmanship over short-term optimization Opportunity to build privacy-preserving systems that set new standards for security and reliability, making a meaningful difference in the industry Responsibilities
Design, build, and scale high-performance, fault-tolerant backend services that handle high request and data volumes with great reliability Own large-scale, multi-tenant distributed systems, driving correctness, reliability, and clear service-level objectives across production environments Collaborate closely with mobile and frontend teams to define and maintain robust API and SDK boundaries that serve demanding enterprise customers Build durable, highly available data and caching layers using technologies such as PostgreSQL, Redis, and NATS or similar tooling Lead development of core enterprise capabilities including SSO, SCIM provisioning, and secure data import/export flows Partner with security and infrastructure engineers to harden production systems and align them with a stringent threat model Preferred Qualifications
Experience with privacy-tech, secure messaging, or cryptographic and end-to-end encrypted systems is a strong plus Background working on products with strict security, compliance, or regulatory requirements, such as in government, fintech, or critical infrastructure Prior experience in early-stage companies (Seed-Series B) where you helped set technical direction and influenced architecture decisions Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field is preferred A track record of thriving in small, senior teams with significant product and architectural ownership, where integrity and curiosity are valued
