Position Overview The Design Engineer will create accurate, code‑compliant designs that balance manufacturing constraints, system deadlines, and customer needs. The role expands to project coordination and design optimization within our metal business unit, managing moderately complex projects and ensuring designs meet structural code requirements, manufacturing standards, and customer expectations.
Responsibilities
Work independently with minimal supervision, managing projects from start to finish while meeting critical deadlines.
Apply structural engineering principles and adapt company design standards to custom‑building conditions.
Use structural design software, continuously expanding knowledge and customizing tools for non‑standard applications.
Generate design packages, review drawings and material lists.
Adhere to project schedules, managing shifting priorities and last‑minute revisions to maintain on‑time delivery.
Communicate effectively with cross‑functional team members to identify, escalaté, and resolve design challenges.
Coordinate with drafting, estimating, and manufacturing teams to ensure design feasibility and efficiency.
Exercise sound engineering judgment to ensure public safety, balancing efficiency with appropriate design conservatism.
Qualifications and Skills – Design Engineer 2
Good understanding of structural mechanics and steel design principles.
Proficient in applicable codes and standards (e.g., IBC, ASCE 7, AISC).
Knowledgeable in design standards and design software.
Ability to learn methods to reduce manufacturing and drafting costs, enhance ease of erection, and increase overall value to the customer.
Application and adherence to relevant industry codes and standards to ensure regulatory compliance.
Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn proprietary systems and codes.
Expansion of personal knowledge of Cornerstone Engineering design standards and adaptation of design software to custom conditions.
Qualifications and Skills – Design Engineer 3
Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) with demonstrated competence in structural design and code compliance.
Seal and sign calculations and/or drawings in various state jurisdictions.
Proven ability to design metal buildings of medium to high complexity, ensuring efficiency, safety, and adherence to customer specifications.
Consistently drive productivity improvements while maintaining high standards of accuracy and completeness, focusing on reducing manufacturing and drafting costs.
Capable of managing projects through all phases, ensuring coordination across departments.
Provide technical oversight, review work, and mentor junior engineers to support professional development and maintain quality standards.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or related field).
Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in metal building design or structural engineering for Design Engineer 2; minimum of 4 years for Design Engineer 3.
Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) certification strongly recommended; active pursuit of Professional Engineer (PE) licensure preferred but not mandatory.
Proficiency in structural design and modeling software (e.g., RISA, STAAD, AutoCAD, or equivalent).
