Product System Design Engineer We are looking for a talented Product System Design Engineer to join our team in Engineering in De Pere, WI.
Impact and Responsibilities
Drive timely resolution of VPI and field issues
by identifying root causes, recommending corrective actions, and owning design solutions through to closure.
Deliver high-quality design decisions
by applying standard engineering processes (DFMEA, Design Reviews, validation checklists) and leveraging tools such as CREO and ANSYS.
Strengthen product performance
by supporting concept selection, optimization, and specification development across components and subsystems.
Influence cross-functional alignment
by communicating clear design intent through structured Design Review packages and engaging technical stakeholders.
Improve product reliability and quality
by incorporating validation and analysis insights into design refinements and decision-making.
Contribute to continuous improvement
by executing established engineering processes while identifying opportunities to enhance tools, systems, and workflows.
Build technical capability
by independently managing moderately complex design challenges and expanding knowledge of products, systems, and applications.
Enhance team effectiveness
by collaborating across disciplines, coordinating with technicians or support resources, and contributing to shared engineering and program goals.
Qualifications
Integrate cross-functional requirements into design solutions
by translating stakeholder needs into validated system designs and clearly communicating design capability through structured design reviews.
Apply strong mechanical design and analysis skills
by developing accurate CAD models and leveraging simulation tools (FEA, DVA) to inform design decisions and optimize performance.
Design robust mechanical systems
by considering full lifecycle requirements (performance, durability, manufacturability, serviceability, and cost) to meet both customer and business needs.
Develop precise engineering specifications
by creating detailed models, drawings, and BOMs that ensure manufacturability, quality, and alignment with industry and Cummins standards.
Leverage simulation and modeling to drive decisions
by using analytical tools to predict product performance and validate designs against system and component-level requirements.
Demonstrate strong product problem‑solving capability
by identifying root causes, implementing data‑driven corrective actions, and preventing recurrence through systemic improvements.
Execute with discipline across the product lifecycle
by managing requirements, configuration, and change control while ensuring alignment to program timelines, quality targets, and stakeholder expectations.
Collaborate and communicate effectively
by working across functions, making timely decisions, documenting technical insights, and continuously developing skills while valuing diverse perspectives.
Education and Certifications
Bachelor's degree in an appropriate STEM field, or equivalent experience, is required.
This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.
Experience
Significant relevant experience required, including managerial and budgetary experience.
Additional Responsibilities
Role requires approx. 60% of time spent working in the DePere WI design/upfit facility.
Design and layout using 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) – Creo preferred.
Create 2D drawings/layouts/schematics from 3D CAD models, markups, sketches.
Select materials and make drawing changes.
Size Air intake, Exhaust, and other sub-systems used on engines to meet Cummins requirements.
Create bill of materials for release to the Cummins business system.
Calculate and gather information to perform calculations for design of systems.
Communicate with vendors and customers to verify correct design calculations and customer specifications.
Assist manufacturing with technical issues, with direction from staff.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Functional / Technical
Read and interpret operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in a variety of forms.
Understanding of stationary and mobile engine applications.
Strong organization and time management skills.
Electrical experience is preferred.
Obtain accurate information from customers/vendors through excellent communication skills.
