The Role To achieve our vision of a world with Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions and Zero Congestion, GM Mechatronics Hardware platform is evolving to provide robust service to our customers. We are seeking a highly experienced, technical engineer in propulsion hardware and electrical design to support the end-to-end design and development of our propulsion controller hardware. The Senior Hardware Design Engineer will help design and develop propulsion controller hardware for GM’s next generation vehicles, with a background in automotive ECU architecture, design, analysis, and proven ability to launch ECUs into production.
What You’ll Do
Design propulsion controller electrical hardware: schematic capture, worst‑case analysis, PCB layout, bring‑up, debug, signal integrity and power integrity, design verification test, manufacturing support, and production launch.
Develop hardware from concept to launch while meeting cost, timing, quality, and safety targets.
Collaborate with cross‑functional teams (software, mechanical, manufacturing) to ensure seamless integration of the electrical design.
Work closely with contract manufacturing partners from prototype to mass production, maintaining quality, cost, and timing targets.
Create electrical schematics and PCB layout.
Support new IC design/development strategic to propulsion controller designs and architectures.
Perform detailed hardware analysis: worst‑case, thermal, signal integrity, power integrity, etc.
Execute bring‑up of hardware design from power supplies, SoCs, MCUs, network devices, solenoid/valve control, instrumentation, etc.
Lead design for manufacturing (DFM), design for assembly (DFA), and design for testing (DFT).
Drive validation and testing of hardware components and systems, ensuring high reliability and performance.
Develop requirements and maintain validation support equipment.
Establish test plans and protocols to validate designs against requirements and perform testing with team members.
Develop test equipment for bench root‑cause analysis for validation and warranty.
Troubleshoot hardware issues, perform root‑cause analysis, and develop solutions.
Support manufacturing partners in troubleshooting production‑related issues.
Develop requirements to enable third‑party manufacturing of the controller.
Conduct design reviews and provide constructive feedback for optimal solutions.
Lead/support DFMEA/PFMEA, ensuring lessons learned and best practices are included.
Provide guidance and consultation to Design Release Engineers (DREs).
What You’ll Need
Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Computer Engineering or equivalent; Master’s degree preferred.
5+ years of experience in electronic hardware design, focused on propulsion controller and automotive hardware electronics.
Proven ability to launch build‑to‑print hardware into production.
Experience designing propulsion controller hardware and components (SoCs, MCUs, Ethernet Switches, PHY, CAN, power supply design, etc.).
Strong proficiency in circuit design, schematic creation, PCB layout, signal integrity, power integrity, and power management.
Experience with design & analysis tools: Mentor Graphics, Ansys, Simplis, Altair, Mathcad, PSpice & Saber.
In‑depth knowledge of requirements engineering (FMEA, Preliminary Hazard Analyses).
In‑depth knowledge of verification and validation processes.
In‑depth knowledge of embedded software development, testing and associated tools.
Understanding of hardware design and failure modes.
Thorough knowledge of design development, test engineering, manufacturing and assembly operations, engineering processes and procedures.
Knowledge of automotive industry standards (ISO 26262, ASIL) and safety‑critical design principles.
Experience with system‑level integration, interfacing with sensors, processors, and communication protocols.
Experience with design for manufacturing (DFM), design for assembly (DFA), and design for testing (DFT).
Excellent problem‑solving, analytical, and communication skills.
Proven ability to lead complex projects and work in a fast‑paced, cross‑functional environment.
High level of analytical ability; effective interpersonal skills focusing on influencing others, even when priorities differ.
Proficiency in controller development process, including schematics, PCB layouts, EMC, and power dissipation.
In‑depth knowledge of validation procedures and methods to test.
Knowledge of controller manufacturing.
Must be able to legally operate a motor vehicle.
Additional Desired Qualifications
Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Chemical Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics.
5 to 10 years of embedded controls hardware experience.
Experience in the GM component specification and release process.
Knowledge of vehicle dynamics and electronic chassis systems.
Basic understanding of vehicle serial data communications (e.g., CAN, GMLAN, & LIN).
Knowledge of OBD‑II diagnostics.
Knowledge of automotive safety integrity levels (ASIL).
