Tysons, Virginia Software Engineer II – Android As a Software Engineer II, you will work with a team of mobile developers building the Alarm.com Android application used by millions of customers every day to secure and manage their homes and businesses. Our mobile team works on the full spectrum of features including real-time video streaming, IoT device controls, security system management, and smart home automation. As a Software Engineer II, you will have opportunities to work across various technical areas of our mobile platform. Typical projects will involve diverse technologies like Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, Android media frameworks for video streaming, and backend API integrations. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to self-learn are must-have attributes. You must be able to communicate well within a team environment and work independently on self-directed tasks. Develop Android features for our flagship mobile application used by millions of customers. Take part in the entire project life cycle, from requirements development to deployment, with lots of cross-team collaboration with iOS engineers, backend teams, QA, and product managers. Design and implement real-time video streaming features using Android media frameworks, including HLS/RTSP protocols. Build responsive, performant UIs following Material Design guidelines and modern Android best practices. Engage in the research, evaluation, and application of new Android technologies and methodologies to solve challenging project goals. Exercise good judgment. Know when to work quickly, and when to build a robust solution. Bring your ideas! We want our engineers to collaborate on product development, not blindly build to a spec. Other duties as assigned What Do You Need?
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, a related field, or equivalent work experience 2+ years of professional Android development experience Strong proficiency in Kotlin (Java experience is a plus) Experience with Android Studio, Android SDK, and modern architecture patterns (MVVM, MVI, MVP) Experience with RESTful APIs, JSON parsing, and backend service integration Understanding of asynchronous programming using Coroutines and Flow Experience with version control (Git) and collaborative development workflows Strong communication skills and ability to work in cross-functional teams Experience leveraging AI/ML technologies in mobile applications We Would Love It If You Have Some Of The Below (But It Is Fine If You Don't):
Video streaming experience using MediaCodec, HLS/RTSP/WebRTC protocols, or custom media implementations Experience with Jetpack Compose for modern declarative UI development Knowledge of Android Jetpack components such as ViewModel, WorkManager, DataStore Knowledge of Android NDK/JNI for native code integration Familiarity with reactive programming patterns using Kotlin Flow Experience with Gradle, modular app architecture, and dependency management Understanding of mobile security best practices (encryption, secure storage, authentication) Experience with CI/CD pipelines for Android applications Knowledge of mobile analytics and crash reporting tools (Firebase, Crashlytics, Sentry) Experience working with the broader Android ecosystem including Wear OS, Android TV, or app widgets Experience with iOS development, including Swift, SwiftUI, Objective C, and Xcode Please note that sponsorship of new applicants for employment authorization, or any other immigration-related support, is not available for this position at this time.
