Rule §247.1 Purpose and Scope; Definitions Rule §247.2 Code of Ethics and Standard Practices for Texas Educators Instructional Management The assistant athletic trainer promotes improvement of instruction through activities such as the following:
Determine that all student trainers maintain satisfactory progress toward academic success and eventual graduation Ensure that student trainers exhibit good behavior on and off the field Organization Climate The assistant athletic trainer fosters a positive school or organization morale through activities such as the following:
Closely monitor weather for extreme temperatures or dangerous situations that would result in possible safety situations for athletes and coaches Report and make decisions, in coordination with the head coach, regarding practice procedures during extreme weather situations Provide adequate supervision and ensure the safety and security of athletes by closely monitoring conduct of players before, during and after all contests, practices and sport related school activities involving the training room or training areas Maintain a clean and efficient training room Responsible for checking practice and game facilities to make certain these areas are free of potential hazards Organization Improvement The assistant athletic trainer promotes efforts to improve the school or organization through activities such as the following:
Assist head trainer with program for yearly physical examinations of all prospective high school and middle school athletes Assist head trainer with maintaining records of physicals, UIL rules and acknowledgments, student emergency forms, injuries and insurance forms for all athletes Maintain an active program that promotes good sportsmanship and student development through the use of Athletic Department Character Education Program Responsible for assisting head trainer with the inventory, supervision and care of all athletic training equipment, fixtures and properties of the Athletic Department Assist the head trainer in planning annual coaches training regarding UIL medical information, concussion procedures, first aid training, CPR & AED certification, extreme weather procedures, and the Rank One Program Communication and Community Relations The assistant athletic trainer promotes a positive tone for school or community relations through activities such as the following: Serve as a liaison between parents/students/coaches and physicians
Serve as the EMS liaison at home Varsity Football Games Communicate expected student behavior related to athletics and ensure enforcement of student discipline Keep the Athletic Director informed of events within athletic training department Articulate the district's mission and goals in the area of athletics to community and solicit its support in realizing mission Demonstrate an awareness of district/community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs Promote a positive environment and image for the athletic program through effective interpersonal relationships with administration, faculty, parents, teachers and community leaders Demonstrate the use of appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parental involvement Organization Management The assistant athletic trainer manages administrative, fiscal, and facilities functions responsibly through activities such as the following: Prepare athletes for games and practices through evaluations, using tape, wraps, splints, braces and other protective devices, and using treatments as necessary Be in attendance at home and away athletic contests when assigned by head athletic trainer or the Athletic Director. Assess and refer to a physician all athletes with injuries that indicate the need for further medical treatment Be responsible for the use of therapeutic modalities in the treatment and rehabilitation of injuries. Determine the athlete's return to practice or playing status following an injury. Write injury, treatment and rehab reports and make that information available to coaches of injured athlete Submit all Athletic Department requested information accurately and promptly by completing in a timely fashion all required Athletic Department Coach Responsibilities, as stated in the DVISD Athletic Department Handbook Professional Growth and Development The assistant athletic trainer provides leadership in professional growth and development through activities such as the following: Participate in national and state level organizations to stay abreast of latest research and best practices Attend professional development opportunities related to designated subject area Read, synthesize, and disseminate research and information related to best practices from books, journals, list serves, Websites, and other media formats Demonstrate knowledge in athletic training and continuous professional growth by keeping informed of modern trends, techniques and strategies
Attend clinics and or conventions to maintain athletic training license Qualities of Effective Assistant Athletic Trainers Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job Maintain confidentiality
Comply with District policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations. Comply with the standards of conduct set out in Board Policy DH (Legal) and (Local) and with any other policies, regulations, and guidelines that impose duties, requirements, and standards Follow professional, ethical and legal parameters regarding use of drugs and therapeutic agents for treatment and rehabilitation of injured athletes Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and inform Athletic Director of any conditions that are not correctable immediately Demonstrate enthusiasm and dedication to program Maintain expected training room and office decorum at all times Demonstrate self-control and poise by maintaining self-control in all areas related to athletic training responsibilities Act as a positive role model for athletes and peers by dressing professionally for workouts, contests and classroom responsibilities and personally modeling what is expected of the athletes and recognizing the importance his/her actions have on the developing young athlete Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervise job performance of student trainers; give them proper guidance and room for growth Equipment: Personal computer, printer, calculator, telephone, copier, fax machine, and therapeutic modalities Working Conditions: Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Maintain emotional control under stress Work irregular and extended work hours. Continued walking and standing; moderate lifting and carrying; stooping, bending, kneeling, and reaching Exposed to heat, cold, and inclement weather Exposed to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases Frequent travel
