About
In this role you will
Provide technical leadership and guidance to project teams developing state-of-the-art methods and applying research results to meet programmatic goals.
Solve abstract and complex problems using in-depth analysis, advanced technical knowledge, and innovative techniques.
Serve as the primary technical point of contact for program managers and partner organizations, sharing advanced knowledge and recommending methodologies.
Apply significant expertise in computational science and engineering domains such as computational mechanics, chemistry, physics, materials, nuclear engineering, electrical engineering, non-destructive evaluation, robotics, optical systems, HPC, or other related areas.
Develop and apply complex algorithms in machine learning areas including deep learning, unsupervised/self-supervised learning, representation learning, zero- or few-shot learning, active learning, reinforcement learning, natural language processing, ensemble methods, statistical modeling and inference, performance optimization (scalability, novel hardware), physics-informed machine learning, and agentic AI workflows.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional job responsibilities at the SES.4 level
Establish and implement broad project vision and strategy, influencing technical direction for self and others to drive project outcomes.
Develop novel research, technologies, capabilities, and methodologies enabled by applied statistics, machine learning, AI, or uncertainty quantification.
Provide subject-matter expertise and conduct highly complex analyses within machine learning, AI, applied statistics, and/or uncertainty quantification.
Qualifications
Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance (U.S. citizenship required).
Master’s degree in Engineering, Machine Learning, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Advanced knowledge and significant experience in AI/ML or data science, applying applications in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, computational mechanics, electrical engineering, applied statistics, uncertainty quantification, or a related area.
Significant experience directing, leading, developing, and executing independent research projects.
Advanced organizational, verbal and written communication, and interpersonal skills for multidisciplinary collaboration and reporting.
Significant experience working effectively in a team environment with multidisciplinary personnel while managing multiple concurrent tasks and deliverables.
Additional qualifications at the SES.4 level
Expertise in advanced machine learning or data science concepts, with significant application experience in physics, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, computational mechanics, electrical engineering, applied statistics, uncertainty quantification, or a related technical area.
Proven ability to lead technical personnel and projects, perform project planning and execution, and develop innovative solutions to highly complex problems.
Senior communication, facilitation, interpersonal, and collaboration skills necessary to lead teams, present and explain information, and advise senior management and stakeholders.
Qualifications We Desire
Ability to obtain and maintain Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access (U.S. citizenship required).
PhD in Engineering, Machine Learning, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent.
Significant experience developing, deploying, and/or utilizing multi-physics simulation codes on massively parallel HPC architectures used by DOE and DoD stakeholders.
Pay Range $175,530 – $267,060 annually for the SES.3 level and $210,630 – $267,060 for the SES.4 level.
