General Summary This role involves applying sterilization techniques and managing the operation of sterilization equipment to ensure all instruments meet safety and quality standards. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Apply principles of decontamination and sterilization with precision. Use personal protective equipment correctly, including gowns, gloves, face masks, and boots. Sort instrumentation for cleaning according to manufacturer specifications. Clean CASE carts thoroughly and inspect sterilized packages for integrity. Utilize biological and chemical sterilization indicators properly. Sterilize instruments accurately and label them appropriately. Document sterilizer loads and tests meticulously. Assemble instrumentation correctly and test for optimal functioning. Report and remove broken or malfunctioning instruments from service. Identify department-specific instruments, such as those used in surgery, obstetrics, and emergency services. Maintain daily inventory of equipment and supplies. Demonstrate attention to detail, commitment to quality, and continuous improvement. Work independently while meeting attendance and punctuality standards.
Education High school diploma or equivalent is required. Experience Previous experience in sterile processing is preferred but not mandatory. Certification/License Certification as a Sterile Processing Technician must be obtained within six months of employment. Mental and Physical Requirements This position requires considerable mental focus to operate equipment and care for instruments. Physical demands include standing, walking, lifting up to 35 pounds, and reaching. The role involves working in close proximity to others and sometimes in distracting environments. Working Conditions Exposure to wet or humid conditions during instrument decontamination is common. Occasional exposure to temperature changes, fumes, airborne particles, and infectious materials occurs. The job may require working in confined spaces for extended periods.
