Position Summary The Augustine Institute seeks a Senior Backend Engineer to build and maintain the server-side systems that power its digital platforms. This role is primarily responsible for creating and managing cloud infrastructure for our customer-facing platform, developing application and back-end logic, managing complex identity and authorization systems, and ensuring secure, scalable, and compliant back-end operations across the organization’s technology ecosystem.
Specific duties are listed below, but may not be all inclusive.
Qualifications Significant, demonstrable, and proven experience in:
Managing complex identity and authorization models for internal and user-facing applications, including SSO, RBAC, ABAC, and ReBac (Zanizbar-style) authorization
Keycloak for Identity, OPA (Open Policy Agent), and/or similar policy creation and enforcement systems
Microsoft-based authentication and authorization
Cloud networking (Route 53, Cloudflare, AWS VPCs)
Secure development at all levels, and defense in depth
Transactions, orders, subscriptions, entitlements, and resource provisioning
Real-time and event-driven architecture / asynchronous messaging
Building and managing ETL/ELT pipelines and batch data processing
Developing in compliance with SOC 2 Type II and privacy requirements (GDPR/CCPA)
Must-know technologies and tools:
Nest.js and Node, TypeScript
AWS (SNS, SQS, SES, RDS, S3, CloudFront, Route53, Aurora)
Keycloak, nginx, Redis / ElastiCache / Upstash
Mux or similar video infrastructure
Stripe and in-app payment systems for mobile and web
Experience with or strong understanding of (preferred):
OpenFGA and/or graph databases (Neo4j, Neptune)
New Relic and/or DataDog
AWS Firehose, Kinesis
Search tools such as Typesense, Meilisearch, Algolia, or Elasticsearch
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience
Skills and Abilities
Ability to identify when niche specialists are needed and effectively delegate work to contractors, ensuring output meets quality standards and includes sufficient knowledge transfer for ongoing in-house maintenance
Very hands-on while also able to look at things holistically to ensure back-end technology works together in as cost-effective a way as reasonably possible
Comfortable serving as the primary AWS root user and administrator, or overseeing that role as applicable
Platform and product mindset
