About
Gather complete and accurate medication histories from patients in the Emergency Department. Ensure medications are stored securely and in compliance with regulatory standards. Process and document patient information using EPIC and other pharmacy systems. Communicate effectively with patients, hospital staff, and visitors. Maintain accurate documentation and billing for all services provided. Assist with sterile and non-sterile medication preparation and distribution. Maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked work environment. Support training and onboarding of team members as needed. Participate in pharmacy operational workflows and process improvements. Demonstrate professionalism and a strong service orientation in all interactions. Position Overview: The Pharmacy Technician, Intermediate provides pharmaceutical care to patients within the UPMC Health System. This role requires proficiency in essential technician functions including sterile and non-sterile medication preparation, medication packaging and labeling, medication filling, and distribution. All services are provided in compliance with Department of Health, The Joint Commission, and State Board of Pharmacy regulations. Title and salary will be determined based upon education and experience. Responsibilities: Filling: Assist in filling medication orders using correct labeling, counting, and stocking practices; initial and date products as required. Prepare oral and injectable medications (including IV admixtures and TPN) using proper techniques to ensure accuracy and safety. Work in sterile product environments preparing cytotoxic and hazardous medications (e.g., chemotherapy) using proper aseptic technique. Distribution: Participate in medication distribution, including medication cassettes, emergency carts, and controlled substances in accordance with policies and regulations. Retrieve discontinued medications and return or credit them appropriately. Maintain positive and professional service relationships during the distribution process. Investigational: Assist in the procurement, storage, preparation, accountability, and distribution of investigational and study medications. General: Communicate effectively with hospital personnel, patients, and visitors; refer clinical questions to pharmacists. Ensure all medications are stored securely and in compliance with regulatory standards (DOH, Joint Commission, State Board of Pharmacy). Maintain a clean, organized, and adequately stocked work environment. Utilize pharmacy systems to process and maintain patient records and documentation. Maintain required logs and records (e.g., refrigerator logs, inventory logs). Follow proper procedures for cash handling and point-of-sale transactions, where applicable. Manage inventory levels across pharmacy stock areas and automated dispensing systems. Maintain and restock automated medication stations, crash carts, and emergency supplies. Support controlled substance compliance through accurate documentation, auditing, and secure handling. Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care and operational efficiency. Qualifications:Required: Completion of high school diploma or equivalent OR Completion of an accredited pharmacy technician program and Two years of Pharmacy Technician experience.
