Senior Automation Designer Location: Co. Cavan, Ireland (with occasional travel to customer sites as required) Job Type: Full-Time | Permanent Industry: Special Purpose Machinery & Bespoke Automation Overview An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Automation Designer to join a growing engineering organisation specialising in the design and delivery of bespoke automation systems and special-purpose machinery. Working across a diverse range of sectors including medical devices, manufacturing, industrial automation, automotive, and food production, you will play a key role in delivering innovative automation solutions ranging from machine upgrades and standalone automation equipment to fully integrated robotic production cells. This position is ideally suited to a highly skilled automation professional who enjoys solving complex engineering challenges, driving technical excellence, and mentoring engineering teams while contributing to the successful delivery of high-value automation projects. The Opportunity As project complexity and business growth continue to increase, the Senior Automation Designer will be instrumental in enhancing engineering capability, improving design standards, and supporting the ongoing development of automation technologies. This is a hands-on technical leadership role where you will take ownership of design quality, provide expert guidance throughout the project lifecycle, and collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver robust and commercially viable automation solutions. The successful candidate will combine strong technical expertise with commercial awareness, ensuring designs are innovative, practical, cost-effective, and aligned with project objectives. Key Responsibilities Technical Leadership Lead the design and technical development of bespoke automation systems, machine layouts, and integrated production solutions. Translate customer requirements into effective automation concepts and detailed engineering designs. Conduct and oversee design reviews to ensure compliance with engineering standards and best practices. Drive continuous improvement initiatives related to design methodologies, standards, and documentation processes. Provide technical leadership and support throughout project delivery. Engineering & Project Delivery Work collaboratively with mechanical, electrical, controls, and software engineering teams to develop integrated automation solutions. Support machine safety assessments, risk evaluations, and compliance with relevant safety and regulatory standards. Ensure the accuracy and completeness of engineering documentation, including drawings, bills of materials, and technical files. Monitor project progress and ensure design activities align with project timelines and milestones. Contribute to commissioning, troubleshooting, and system optimisation activities when required. Customer & Stakeholder Engagement Engage directly with customers throughout the design, build, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) phases. Provide technical expertise during project reviews and customer meetings. Support successful project outcomes through proactive problem solving and effective communication. Team Development Mentor and support junior engineers and designers. Promote a culture of innovation, technical excellence, and continuous learning. Assist in strengthening internal engineering capability and design standards. Candidate Requirements Qualifications & Experience Degree qualification in Automation Engineering, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience. Minimum 710 years' experience in automation design, machine design, or system integration environments. Proven experience delivering complex automation or special-purpose machinery projects from concept through commissioning. Strong commercial awareness and understanding of project delivery constraints. Technical Expertise Extensive knowledge of industrial automation systems and machine design principles. Experience working with industrial robotics platforms such as ABB, Fanuc, KUKA, or similar. Understanding of motion control, machine vision systems, and material handling technologies. Familiarity with machine safety standards and risk assessment processes. Knowledge of ISO 13849, IEC 62061, and related machinery safety standards. Experience supporting CE marking activities and technical file preparation is advantageous. Personal Attributes Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
