About
G. Educate patients and family members on administration and use of insulin and other blood glucose lower medications, blood glucose monitoring, sick day management, hypoglycemia, and other topics appropriate to diabetes management including but not limited to pathophysiology and natural history, acute and chronic complications, role of exercise in management, and psychological impacts of the conditions and patients and care givers. Document education and evaluate barriers to adherence. Document resources used. Assess patient and caregivers' needs for follow up education. H. Teach patients and caregivers how to document blood glucose readings and repot them to the Division's diabetes program staff. I. Educate and be a resource for other healthcare professionals at SIU regarding diabetes mellitus and prediabetes including diagnostic tests, treatment options, and indications for diabetes educator and dietitian referrals. Teaching/Education 10% A. Participate in activities to educate hospital personnel (e.g., nurses, nurse technicians, and Food and Nutrition Services staff) on important nutritional topics in hospital diabetes management.
B. Participate in educational programs on hospital diabetes management at SIU School of Medicine, partner teaching hospitals, and other healthcare organizations under the direction of the Division Chief. C. Contribute to diabetes and nutritional education of physician trainees (fellows, resident physicians, and medical students) during diabetes team rounds and division conferences as assigned. D. Supervise or delegate supervision as appropriate to dietetics interns rotating in the SIU Division of Endocrinology. Research 10%
A. Assist in conducting investigator initiated clinical research, including protocol development, study execution (e.g., data collection), data analysis, and preparing results for dissemination (e.g., presentation at professional meetings or publication in peer reviewed journals) as appropriate under direction of the Division Chief or appropriate division faculty members. Administrative 10% A. Supervise development and revision of diabetes and nutrition related educational material. B. Perform duties and responsibilities as required to achieve and maintain American Diabetes Association certification for the Division's diabetes education program. Collaborate with the division personnel in gathering data for ADA accreditation. C. Lead monthly meetings with diabetes education program personnel and determine agenda items (e.g., scheduling, workflow, marketing, research, etc) in collaboration with education program personnel. D. Track and report safety events for the division fellowship. Lead quality meetings twice annually with faculty members and fellows and share results with the hospital Glycemic Committee when necessary. E. Serve on the division's Clinical Competency Committee and the Springfield Memorial Hospital Glycemic Committee. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
Current Registered Dietitian licensure from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulations
Master's degree in a specialty area related to Nutrition and Dietetics.
Six years (72 months) of professional experience as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).
Board Certified Diabetes Educator
