About
The Elementary School (K–5th Grade) Counselor plays a key role in fostering the academic, social, and emotional development of students in grades K–5. This position requires broad experience, cultural competency, and the ability to address both school-wide priorities and individual student needs through a comprehensive and responsive counseling program.
Key Responsibilities
Student Support and Development
- Respond to students’ academic and social-emotional needs with developmentally appropriate interventions.
- Assess student abilities, interests, and achievements to support self-understanding and guide middle school planning.
- Plan and implement group counseling programs informed by student needs and measurable objectives.
- Provide one-on-one counseling sessions to support academic, emotional, and developmental growth.
Collaboration and Communication
- Build strong, proactive relationships with students, parents, teachers, staff, and administrators through various communication platforms (email, phone, video conferencing).
- Collaborate with the Lower School Dean, K–5 faculty, and advisors to establish holistic student support systems.
- Work closely with 6–8 and college counselors to ensure vertical alignment of the school counseling program, with a focus on transitions into online learning and middle school.
Program Delivery and Engagement
- Lead live, monthly webinar sessions for students and families, addressing academic, career, and social-emotional development.
- Contribute to enrollment and retention efforts by participating in virtual open houses and re-enrollment discussions.
- Create and distribute communications (such as newsletters) that address student and family needs.
Professional Responsibilities
- Use student data to identify programming priorities and evaluate effectiveness.
- Participate actively and professionally in school-wide meetings, events, and communications, including some evening virtual events.
- Engage in continuous professional development and self-assessment to enhance counseling practices.
- Maintain confidentiality related to students, families, staff, and school operations.
- Perform additional counseling-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Education and Certification
- Master’s degree in school counseling or a related field
- Active School Counseling certification, with a commitment to ongoing compliance with state and local credentialing and background check requirements
Experience and Skills
- Minimum of 3 years of experience working with elementary-aged students in a school counseling or educational support role
- Proven ability to implement group programs with measurable outcomes
- Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
- Proficient with educational technology tools, including word processing, G Suite, Learning Management Systems, and Student Information Systems
- Strong analytical, evaluative, and organizational abilities
Work Environment
