Senior Controls Engineer
Summary
Under limited direction, the Senior Controls Engineer is responsible for the design, programming, and implementation of complex control systems within material handling and distribution center environments. This role owns full project lifecycles-from concept through commissioning-and plays a key part in standardization, advanced troubleshooting, and cross-functional coordination.
This position requires deep expertise in PLC-based systems and a strong understanding of high-throughput distribution and warehouse automation operations.
What You'll Do
System Architecture & Standardization
Design and develop PLC and HMI architectures for moderately complex automated systems.Enhance and maintain reusable code libraries and configuration templates.Support and help enforce engineering standards and best practices.
Technical Leadership & Execution
Program, test, and commission control systems including conveyors, merges, and sortation systems used in distribution centers.Lead FAT/SAT activities and oversee on-site commissioning efforts.Troubleshoot and resolve complex system issues both remotely and in the field.Ensure accurate documentation and proper version control across all deliverables.
Team Leadership & Mentorship
Mentor junior engineers and contribute to peer reviews.Support onboarding by sharing tools, processes, and technical guidance.Develop internal training materials and documentation.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Act as a key technical resource across engineering disciplines.Partner with Project Management on scope definition, scheduling input, and commissioning strategy.Provide direction to subcontractors and system integration partners.
Continuous Improvement & Innovation
Identify opportunities to improve commissioning efficiency, code reusability, and HMI usability.Support implementation of new tools, technologies, and system enhancements.Contribute to internal innovation and continuous improvement initiatives.
What You Bring
Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.5-7+ years of experience in industrial controls engineering with ownership of project execution.Extensive, hands-on PLC programming experience is required.Strong experience in material handling, parcel, or distribution center automation environments is required.
Technical Skills
Advanced proficiency with PLC platforms such as RSLogix 5000 / Studio 5000 and Siemens TIA Portal.Experience with HMI/SCADA platforms (Ignition, FactoryTalk View, or similar).Strong ability to design and optimize PLC logic for performance and maintainability.Experience with industrial networks (Ethernet/IP, Profinet), VFDs, servo systems, and safety systems.
Additional Qualifications
Ability to manage multiple projects while providing technical leadership.Willingness to travel approximately 35% for system startup and commissioning.Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across teams.
Base Compensation is $120k-$150k DOE
