Reviews daily, the on-time performance of scheduled trains, and identifies trends that adversely affect their schedules and the service NJ TRANSIT provides to its customers; makes the necessary decisions to accommodate our customers, ensuring that they are provided the highest level of safety, efficiency, and comfort.
Monitors crew schedules and equipment cycles and ensures their efficient and timely implementation. Reacts and responds to any disruptions of service by modifying and rearranging crew and equipment cycles as they affect posted schedules.
Supervise transportation crews in the performance of their duties, ensuring that they are knowledgeable of and comply with all NORAC operating rules, NJ TRANSIT Special Instructions, FRA Codes of Regulations, and applicable corporate policies, thereby ensuring a safe and productive environment for all employees and for NJ TRANSIT’s customers.
Responds to and investigates accidents, injuries, and unusual occurrences to determine causes; provides documentation by completing forms and by other formats as required. Takes corrective action to prevent reoccurrences by issuing various forms of instruction, reprimand and other progressive discipline to employees involved, as warranted.
Rides a sufficient and varied number of trains weekly, observing - with a customer focus - the service provided by on-board personnel. Completes required reports and TESTS as they pertain to rule and safety compliance, revenue collection and overall quality of service. Investigates customer complaints processed by the Support Force system and provides responses detailing what corrective action was taken.
Education, Experience, and Qualifications:
High School diploma or equivalent, plus seven (7) years of railroad operation experience required, must include 4 years of supervisory/lead role experience. (i.e., assigning work to others, inspecting the work of others in assigned unit; responsible for oversight that safety rules and policies are followed, counseling and disciplining employees, handling problematic customers)
An associate degree in Transportation, Business Administration, or Public Administration from a US Department of Education accredited college or university can be substituted for two (2) years of required experience.
In-depth knowledge of railroad operations, including, but not limited to, FRA regulations and requirements for the operation and movement of trains, maintenance of way, transportation and mechanical required.
Must be proficient in reading and interpreting regulations, and procedures.
Must have good verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to manage emergency situations as well as make independent judgements using sound reasoning and knowledge.
Experience working in Conductor title complement supervisory requirements
