DevOps Engineer
to strengthen the reliability, automation, and resilience of our AWS-hosted web application. This role bridges our
development
and
cybersecurity (DevSecOps)
functions to ensure smooth, secure, and repeatable deployments from GitHub to AWS. The DevOps Engineer will be responsible for building CI/CD pipelines, standardizing branch workflows, managing environment consistency, and overseeing critical
infrastructure maintenance
tasks such as patching, configuration drift prevention, AMI management, and continuity planning. This is an excellent opportunity for a technically curious volunteer to gain real-world DevOps and cloud experience while contributing to a mission-driven nonprofit organization. Key Responsibilities CI/CD Pipeline and Deployment Automation Design, implement, and maintain
CI/CD pipelines
using AWS CodePipeline, CodeBuild, and/or GitHub Actions. Collaborate with developers to define and enforce a
branching strategy
(feature/*, uat, main) ensuring consistent deployments and clean releases. Create and apply
Pull Request templates
and merge policies to improve testing and review discipline. Automate environment setup and deployment processes using
Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC)
tools such as Terraform or AWS CloudFormation. Integrate security and quality checks (e.g., dependency scanning, secret validation, and SAST/DAST tools) into the pipeline in collaboration with the DevSecOps Engineer. Configuration Management and Environment Health Manage and monitor
AWS Elastic Beanstalk
and related AWS environments for stability, scalability, and performance. Maintain
AMI versions
and enforce configuration consistency across development, UAT, and production environments to avoid drift. Use
AWS Systems Manager Patch Manager
or equivalent automation scripts to ensure all EC2 instances are patched and compliant. Configure
CloudWatch dashboards
and alerts to track uptime, cost, and performance trends. Work closely with the DevSecOps Engineer to respond to AWS
Security Hub ,
GuardDuty , or
Config
findings related to infrastructure. Backup, Disaster Recovery, and Continuity Implement and maintain
automated backup routines
for application environments, configuration data, and RDS instances. Conduct
test restorations
to validate backup integrity and ensure that recovery procedures function as expected. Develop, document, and periodically update
disaster recovery (DR)
procedures, including restoration workflows for AWS environments. Draft and maintain an
IT continuity plan
outlining recovery timelines, dependencies, and escalation steps. Generate a
monthly continuity and environment health report , summarizing patching, backup verification, and key system metrics. Required Qualifications Candidates should demonstrate
one or more
of the following: Bachelor’s degree (or current enrollment) in
Computer Science, Information Technology , or a related discipline. Entry-level certification or equivalent hands-on experience such as:
AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner
or
AWS Certified SysOps Administrator – Associate CompTIA Security+
(preferred baseline for all technical volunteers)
A
GitHub or GitLab portfolio
demonstrating experience with CI/CD automation, scripting, or AWS environments. Technical Expectations: Proficiency with
AWS services
(Elastic Beanstalk, EC2, S3, IAM, RDS, CloudWatch). Familiarity with
Git
and version-control workflows. Basic scripting ability in
Bash, Python, or PowerShell . Understanding of
CI/CD concepts ,
cloud security basics ,
patching , and
infrastructure reliability . Strong documentation and communication habits. Preferred Qualifications Experience automating deployments with
AWS CodePipeline ,
CodeBuild , or
GitHub Actions . Familiarity with
Terraform
or
CloudFormation
for Infrastructure-as-Code. Working knowledge of
AWS Systems Manager ,
Backup , and
Patch Manager . Exposure to
monitoring tools
(e.g., CloudWatch). Experience planning
disaster recovery
or
continuity exercises . Prior experience in a
DevOps or cloud operations
volunteer or professional role. Personal Attributes Proactive and resourceful, with strong attention to operational detail. Communicates clearly across development, security, and management teams. Eager to learn modern DevOps tools and best practices. Organized, dependable, and committed to following through on deliverables. Values transparency, documentation, and collaborative problem-solving.
