Founded in 2004, BME Strategies is a Massachusetts-based consulting firm specializing in the design, implementation, and evaluation of public health programs for local, regional, and state government partners. Our work supports evidence-based, community-driven solutions that strengthen public health systems and advance equity across the communities we serve. At BME, our clients are on the front lines of Public Health. Priorities may shift but our commitment to supporting our partners does not. We take pride in having multi-year, multi-project engagements, often working closely as an extension of their staff. Our success comes from our shared values: a bias toward action; optimistically collaborative; willingness to navigate ambiguity; minimal ego - no job is too small or big; pursuing the equitable solution; always learning, and; committed to quality at every stage.
Position & Project Overview BME Strategies is hiring a full-time Data Visualization Developer to support the Massachusetts Local Public Health Data Solution called Metrik, a Commonwealth collaborative initiative by the Executive Office of Health and Human Services (EOHHS) and the Department of Public Health (DPH). This role will translate curated data in the cloud-based database (Snowflake) into professional dashboards, indicators, charts, and interactive analytical products for the Foundational Public Health Services dashboards and related Local Public Health (LPH) use cases.
This role will serve as the bridge between documented analytic requirements (including business requirements, business rules, indicator specifications, and methodologies) and the business intelligence (BI) visualization layer by implementing high-quality, and maintainable BI assets suitable for stakeholder review and refinement. The primary business intelligence tool is pending executive decision, though experience with both Tableau and Power BI is valued.
Key Responsibilities BME Org-Wide Responsibilities for Consultants:
Leads or co-leads larger projects, technical and advisory, and contributes to project design.
Independently drives work with minimal day-to-day supervision and project oversight.
May manage Associates and Senior Associates in a supervisory capacity, if/as needed.
Manages projects to exemplary client satisfaction; Contributes to and/or leads proposals.
This role will be responsible for delivering production-quality BI and visualization work, including:
Build dashboards, charts, and interactive views aligned to approved requirements, indicators, and business rules, using Snowflake-curated data as the source of truth.
Develop standardized visualization components and templates (e.g., filter controls, parameters, tooltips, legends, export patterns) to support consistency across products.
Implement indicator and metric logic in the BI layer where appropriate (e.g., calculations, measures, formatting, labeling) consistent with documented methodologies and conventions.
Configure and maintain BI semantic layer/modeling artifacts as applicable (e.g., Tableau data sources/extracts where relevant, Power BI datasets/models), preserving alignment with Snowflake structures.
Improve performance and usability through tuning and optimization (e.g., query efficiency, workbook/model design, visual density, filter strategies).
Support release readiness and visual quality assurance, including filter behavior, crosstab consistency, export validation, and stakeholder review cycles.
Participate in DPH/LPH engagement and refinement sessions and translate feedback into prioritized visualization updates.
Work within a structured delivery environment using Jira, Confluence, SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, and Microsoft Office.
Experience, Qualifications, & Skills
Required Experience and Qualifications:
Minimum of 4-6 years of experience required, including 2+ years in an Associate role in a similar consulting environment
1-4 years of client-facing work experience
Master’s degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Health Informatics, Data Analytics, or a related field.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced consulting environment.
An alignment with BME’s shared values.
Experience in the public health space; demonstrated experience understanding public health outcomes for communities/groups.
Demonstrated experience developing BI dashboards and analytical products for operational or executive audiences.
Strong proficiency in SQL and experience using a cloud analytics database as a BI source (Snowflake preferred).
Demonstrated experience developing in Tableau, Power BI, and/or other visualization tools including dashboard design, interactivity patterns, and publishing workflows.
Demonstrated ability to translate requirements, business rules, and indicator definitions into well-structured dashboards and visualizations.
Experience designing for performance and maintainability (e.g., efficient data source design, reusable components/templates, scalable workbook/model structures).
Experience collaborating in a structured delivery environment (e.g., Jira/Confluence/SharePoint/Teams).
Ability to work across teams.
An entrepreneurial mindset.
Preferred Experience and Qualifications:
Experience supporting public sector and/or public health stakeholders.
Familiarity with public health datasets and reporting concepts (rates, stratifications, time trends) to represent indicators accurately in dashboards.
Experience supporting iterative stakeholder review cycles and incorporating feedback into BI deliverables.
Demonstrated understanding of how to translate user requirements and feedback into a technical framework.
Strong communication skills.
In this role, success will look like:
Stakeholders receive clear, consistent, high-performing dashboards that accurately reflect documented indicators and business rules aligned with the Foundational Public Health Services.
BI assets are maintainable and reusable (templates/components/semantic artifacts), enabling faster iteration across future dashboards.
Release cycles are supported with disciplined QA and structured refinement based on DPH/LPH feedback.
