The California State University, Office of the Chancellor is seeking an experienced leader for the position of
Associate Vice Chancellor, Academic Programs, Innovation and Faculty Excellence
to provide transformative vision, thought leadership, and strategic direction across the 22-campus CSU system.
Classification Administrator IV
Salary The anticipated budgeted salary is up to
$300,000
per year, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Work Arrangements
Telecommute two days per week
Three days on site at the headquarters in Long Beach, California

Position Information The AVC will lead the Division of Academic Affairs, driving breakthrough academic policy, program development, pedagogical innovation, leadership development, and faculty excellence programming. The role involves strategic and operational guidance to university leaders and the system’s leadership, partnering with provosts, faculty, and external stakeholders to advance CSU’s goals for access, affordability, student success, and academic excellence.
Responsibilities
Partner with the VCAA and academic units to develop and implement breakthrough initiatives for scale, including innovative pedagogy, technology integration, personalized learning, and high‑impact practices.
Lead the development of innovation labs, pilot programs, and scaling mechanisms; champion experimentation and evidence‑based innovation.
Serve as system spokesperson on pedagogical innovation, representing CSU at conferences and in scholarly discourse.
Research and evaluate educational technologies (AI, learning analytics, AR/VR, adaptive systems, simulation, gamification) and develop implementation strategies.
Support faculty in adopting innovative tools and methodologies through training, resources, and communities of practice.
Develop evaluation frameworks to assess pedagogical tools and support scholarship of teaching and learning.
Promote integrated approaches that combine teaching with student support services and foster collaboration between academic affairs and student services.
Design strategies for personalized learning pathways that respond to student background and needs.
Lead initiatives in high‑impact practices, experiential learning, undergraduate research, community engagement, interdisciplinary learning, and career‑integrated education.
Design and implement leadership development programs for department chairs, deans, and faculty aspiring to administrative roles.
Oversee faculty pipeline programs, including the California Pre‑Doctoral Program and Chancellor’s Doctoral Incentive Program.
Create assessment frameworks to measure the impact of leadership and faculty development programs.
Serve as liaison to the Academic Affairs Council, Student Affairs Council, and Academic Senate, facilitating communication across the system.
Provide analysis and policy drafting on complex academic issues; support decision‑making for the VCAA, Chancellor, and Board of Trustees.
Prepare agenda items and presentations for Board of Trustees meetings; advise on degree programs, academic plans, and legislative compliance.
Identify impediments to student success, propose policy changes, and coordinate with educational stakeholders.
Oversee doctoral program development, policy, standards, and compliance with Title 5 and education code.
Manage compliance with legislative processes affecting academic curriculum and program changes.
Represent CSU on external committees and liaison to state agencies, advocacy groups, and accreditation bodies.
Maintain integrity in media communications and policy messaging.
Provide system‑level guidance on policy, legislation, admissions, and transfer issues related to health degrees.
Maintain employee benefits policy and train campus personnel on degree program development policies.
Prepare annual reports, deliver presentations, and manage assigned staff.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution; academic credentials appropriate for a tenured faculty member at the associate professor level or higher.
At least six years of administrative leadership in academic affairs (provost, vice‑president, associate/assistant vice‑president, dean, or similar role).
Experience designing, implementing, and leading faculty development and academic leadership programming.
Proven record developing professional development for faculty, department chairs, deans, and administrators.
Experience advancing innovative pedagogy and breakthrough teaching methodologies.
Strong interpersonal skills and experience engaging academic stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
Effective communication skills across internal and external audiences.
Ability to negotiate consensus among diverse groups.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with academic technologies and online education.
Experience managing third‑party contractors and vendors.
Experience in program evaluation, assessment, and research.
Expertise in instructional design methodologies and best practices for classroom, online, and hybrid learning.
Advanced knowledge of California higher‑education statutes, regulations, and federal programs.
Academic credentials appropriate for a tenured faculty member at the full professor level.
