Position Overview
An established cancer center in Silver Spring, MD is seeking a Locum Tenens Hematology/Oncology Nurse Practitioner to provide outpatient coverage. This opportunity arises from the recent resignation of a full-time Hem/Onc physician. The selected NP will work alongside a part-time Hem/Onc, a breast surgeon, a surgical oncologist, and radiation oncologists.
Assignment Details
Start Date: August 11, 2025 (or as soon as credentialed)
Duration: Ongoing until permanent provider is hired
Schedule Options:
3 days/week Monday, Wednesday, Friday (8 hours/day)
5 days/week Monday Friday (8 hours/day)
Setting: Primarily outpatient, with some inpatient consults/rounding
Patient Population: Adult and geriatric (Spanish-speaking patients; interpreter support available)
Practice Mix: 25% Hematology 75% Oncology 0% Internal Medicine
Patient Volume:
Outpatient: 10 patients/day
Inpatient: 2 patients/day
Overall panel: patients, primarily chronic management (low emergent cases)
EMR: EPIC
Team & Support
0.5 FTE Hem/Onc physician
1 Breast Surgeon, 1 Surgical Oncologist, 2 Radiation Oncologists
Patient Navigator, Social Worker, Medical Assistant, and Practice Manager
Chemotherapy not administered onsite (performed at infusion center located 2 miles away)
Radiation Oncologists on-site during coverage
Clinical Responsibilities
Conduct outpatient visits and inpatient rounding as needed
Participate in tumor board discussions
Order and interpret labs, imaging, and tests
Prescribe medications and develop treatment plans
Required Procedures:
Intracavitary/Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy
Intrathecal Chemotherapy
Fine Needle Aspiration/Biopsy
Management of VAD/CV Catheters
Travel & Reimbursement
Flight, hotel, rental car, and mileage reimbursed at IRS standard rate
For long-term engagements, extended stay or Airbnb is preferred (Marriott Courtyard Silver Spring recommended)
Local candidates strongly preferred and prioritized ; full travel considered
Credentialing
Standard timeframe: 3 months
Emergency privileges may be granted once initial application is submitted
Requirements
Active Maryland NP License required at time of submission
Active DEA and CDS required at time of submission
Board Certified Hematology/Oncology NP required
BLS or ACLS certification required to obtain privileges
Note in submission whether available for 3 or 5 days/week
Must indicate travel origin (local providers prioritized)
